Poetry proves again and again that any single overall theory of anything doesn't work. Poetry is always the cat concert under the window of the room in which the official version of reality is being written. -- Charles Simic

Teaching the history of chop suey this week in my #AsianFoodwaysinMigration class, and I have to say this was one of the most unexpected strays "Rather, she argues, the culprit was a bowel obstruction, brought on by a fibrous mass of chop suey that Houdini ate on Oct. 28."

This is one of those book reviews that's so confused that it makes you wonder if the book was really that bad, or the reviewer misunderstood the book.

After Democrats lost control of North Carolina’s supreme court in 2022, Republican justices greenlit voter ID requirements and electoral maps that favor the GOP. One of the two Democrats left on the court is up for reelection this fall.

One of the legislative races in watching most closely: Tricia Cotham, the lawmaker in North Carolina who flipped parties in 2023 to become a Republican & allow the GOP to ban abortion, is running for reelection.

North Carolina A&T students marched an hour each way to vote on the first day of early voting after their campus polling site was removed by the Guilford County Elections Board.

To be Young, Black and Gifted yall… Shout out to the students at North Carolina A&T University. They were stripped of their polling station on campus so they all marched together the nearest one to vote early. They are the future that gives me hope. 👏🏾🤩✨🇺🇸

worth also noting that both the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti happened in her district, and on top of the obviously racist targeting of her personally this is also an attempt to deny the people of Minneapolis their democratically elected representative

Another fruitful Regulator Bookshop excursion: I've only just read an ARC of the astounding Music Against the Night by Yiyun Li, but the material book is beautiful and I wanted to cherish it and read it a second time on paper And I’ve been a Jasper Fforde loyalist since The Eyre Affair (2001)!

In 2001, I came across The Beauty of the Husband on the new books table at @harvardbookstore.bsky.social - and the only information I could glean about the author was her bio: “Anne Carson lives in Canada.” And was instantly smitten

In fact neither reader nor writer nor lover achieves such consummation. The words we read and words we write never say exactly what we mean. The people we love are never just as we desire them. Eros is somewhere in between. -Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet #everynightapoem

What is erotic about reading (or writing) is the play of imagination called forth in the space between you and your object of knowledge. Poets and novelists, like lovers, touch that space to life with their metaphors and subterfuge. -Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet
