now would be a good time for Turek’s opponent to come out as a completely irredeemable piece of shit a la Ramaswamy I guess

anyone know how they model this kind of stuff? bc for all the talk about MN polls making the race look weirdly close for the environment, this doesn’t look particularly close

Republicans will almost certainly pass Democrats at some point in Florida but everyone said that would be today and nope. I still expect like a ~5% loss for Nixon and Jolly but it’s fun to dream a little and follow this.

it continues to be funny to me when i hear people go "but obviously these dsa types just want to destroy the market and implement stalinism" while, meanwhile, they are actually *more* pro-market than the mainline democrat incumbents they're challenging

ICE yesterday formally awarded Acentra $163,125,147.01 to operate its medical claims processing system until Oct. 24, 2030.

Project Salt Box@projectsaltbox.com

Doctors and hospitals that treat people in immigration detention have gone about a year without being paid. Now ICE plans to keep the company hired to fix that problem for up to four more years, without taking bids from anyone else.

sometimes I think the problem with a lot of protest vote related discourse is that it hyperfocuses on one specific type of voter who is relatively easy to understand when there are so many more voters who have even stupider reasons than are readily imaginable

oh my god

in other news I *just* managed to extract a promise from my mom to vote in the midterms which she wasn’t originally going to do even though I *know* she thinks Donald Trump is an incompetent moron. she lives in Texas

gonna be annoying and say I opposed the American journalism institution-ideology complex before it was cool

this was probably peak social credit time. it’s crazy making when US publications are reporting on some black mirror thing that really obviously just…doesn’t exist.

and then all the Americans tell you that you are wrong about what you’re experiencing in your daily life because they read it in a newspaper/saw it on TV!

(like, for real, because I was living in China at the time and so much of the reporting out of pubs like NYT and WaPo nevermind lesser US outlets about China was absolutely terrible. Like, failures to ask basic questions because we’ve pre-drawn a caricatured and clearly ideological conclusion)

wish I could say something more interesting about how this is an unhinged distillation of racism and (literal) brain rot or something like that, but honestly fuck you, leave my representative alone, she has more worth in her pinkie toe than twenty of you combined could ever hope to

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

“Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress. Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat.”

incidentally Mao was successful in establishing himself as head of the Chinese communists because he recognized that 1920s-30s China was an agrarian society and therefore the revolution wasn’t going to come from the barely-existent urban proletariat but rural peasant farmers

and that therefore the existing party leadership’s doctrinaire Marxist-Leninist focus on taking cities was bad strategy. so, uh, the rigid theory people were on the wrong side of that too

ngl I’ve rapidly developed a somewhat intense attachment/defensiveness of Ilhan Omar. The targeting of her just feels so emblematic of all the bullshit this administration has put the Twin Cities through (though ofc I don’t want to elide the fact that her being Somali plays a huge part in this)

Ilhan Omar@ilhanmn.bsky.social

Trump’s goal is to intimidate me and get me to back down. That’s not going to happen. I will not be silenced, and I will not stop fighting for my constituents.

And having somewhat recently moved from a different house district to her district, there is a lot to be said for the fact that I never have to doubt her vote against ICE or for bringing the regime to justice for their crimes. Unfortunately it can’t be said of all democrats

ngl one of the most annoying things in existence is literally being like, several different minorities and having someone else’s minority status brought up as a reason that I should give their opinion more credence

i as an immigrant poc trans person do not actually need to give the opinions of white native born trans people extra weight over my own, thanks!

It’s also like, just okay to have your own opinions! I also happen to know a bunch of other trans people and it turns out we don’t all think the same thing so the fact that one prominent trans person said something doesn’t make that opinion representative!

I don’t know who needs to hear this but there are in fact more types of people on the left (broadly construed) than brunch libs and leftist doomers

(probably no one thinks like this exactly, but boy are people who are super invested in the left/liberal divide, whichever side of it they are on, happy to flatten the other side into a single stereotype)

even if the communist revolution happens the problems won’t get fixed all at once and there will be new ones. I mean, speaking from, uh, familial experience

neuse river hag@neuseriverhag.bsky.social

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

this feels like a case of people feeling offended/threatened by a quality in a brown man that they would applaud in a white one

I need a certain brand of TERFy cis woman who inhabits women’s health spaces to realize that it is in fact not normal to be in debilitating pain from your periods or to have wild, unmanageable hormone-induced mood swings, and acting like it is in order to gatekeep womanhood from trans women

Plenty of women actually do not have physically or mentally debilitating periods, and a specific kind of medical suffering is not the price of entry into womanhood

(This is apropos of nothing on here, I just run into this variety of terfy person a lot. They also tend to react really badly when afab trans people ask for more inclusive language because they’ve bundled their own medical suffering with womenhood so much 🙃)

I need a certain brand of TERFy cis woman who inhabits women’s health spaces to realize that it is in fact not normal to be in debilitating pain from your periods or to have wild, unmanageable hormone-induced mood swings, and acting like it is in order to gatekeep womanhood from trans women

actually does a disservice to everyone because it prevents/delays people who most likely have a real medical issue like endometriosis or PMDD from seeking care under the assumption that those are just normal parts of the Condition of Being Born with a Uterus rather than symptoms

This dashboard is very helpful in posing one of the biggest questions about ICE's ongoing surge in arrests during a time in which enforcement data is extremely limited; have releases gone way up, as removal flights have been flat for months, and ICE hasn't acquired any major new detention resources.

The distance between Ilhan Omar’s Minneapolis office and Renee Good’s memorial is less than a 20 minute walk. It’s about a 40 minute walk to Alex Pretti’s memorial. (George Floyd Square, is, incidentally, about a 10 minute walk.)

ngl one of the most radicalizing experiences I had as a youngster is witnessing people arguing in one case that murdering civilians is always wrong turn around and argue that it was acceptable in another case

Wannabe Apparatchik@apparatchikwannabe.bsky.social

a lot of people have spent the last 3 years trying to invent new categories of civilian which it is ok to commit warcrimes against

you could argue it wasn’t the same people but when the general consensus leans one way in one case and the other in another, it’s at least some of the same people

especially because it’s manifestly obvious that the actual operating principle was actually “it’s okay when we and our allies do it but not okay if the enemy does it”
