This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #BookSky

"Whether Shannon’s conceptualization of information transmission ultimately proves to be a fundamental organizing principle of living systems remains uncertain..." It's like my book doesn't even exist.

mRNA vaccines are perhaps the biggest medical breakthrough of my lifetime.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

A cancer vaccine succeeded in a clinical trial in preventing the recurrence of melanoma, a result experts say is a breakthrough for mRNA-based treatments. Trials for lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and other diseases' vaccines are also underway.

I think I've finally got a pretty good feel for how to explain quantum teleportation so assuming this week doesn't end up completely fucked I'll try to write a blog post about it.

That hurts.

SCOOP: 404 Media placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it. What did we find? It ended up at an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books. Yes. This is literally the logo outside the Amazon warehouse door. Read now:

Putting text, figures, and figure captions into separate sections of the manuscript means that as a reviewer, I have to have three copies of the manuscript open at the same time if I don't want to endlessly scroll. Do better @pnas.org !

Pop Quiz: Who said this: "“Crudely speaking, the amount of information is how much chaos is there in the system. But the mathematics comes out right, so to speak. The amount of information measured by entropy determines how much capacity to leave in the channel.”

The idea that all super intelligence necessarily would want to destroy humanity has always struck me as shallow in the extreme.

Lana Sinapayen@sinalana.eurosky.social

What is the name of this fallacy? I was at a workshop dinner and a group was discussing about how superintelligence means you should want to destroy humans. Then someone asked the people one by one: "would you make yourself superintelligent?" and they all answered yes!

Three great games today: Belgium making up a 2:0 deficit, Kane saving England with two late goals, US outplaying Bosnia and played with true grit with one man down. All instant classics.

I was very skeptical about the enlargement of the World Cup to 48 teams. But I have to say those "smaller" countries have delivered some fantastic games. Uruguay-Cape Verde, Ecuador-Curaçao, and more. Thoroughly entertaining.

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Frankly, it's not even shocking anymore. Just look at the results for "what happens to information absorbed by a black hole"? We've known the answer to this for over 20 years (it was conclusively proved and published) and yet in the minds of physicists it's a big mystery. Frustrating.

Sean Carroll@seanmcarroll.bsky.social

I get that academia forces you to specialize and professionalize and generally put aside childish things, but I remain astonished that most senior physicists have accepted the idea that it's not our job to understand the nature of reality at a deep level.
