I said "Oh, I don't know about that!" thinking he was humoring me. But then he said "It is. You try to sense the higher potential of an art form and hold the artist to that standard." He'd never read me, and that was fine. I was grateful to meet one eloquent person in the wild who felt that way.

It's been one year in a world without Gorp. (And in case you hadn't been able to tell, the world is much bleaker for his absence.) If you've got a big/small, dumb/smart precious angel, please smother them in kisses for me.

Chris Corpse-lan 🎃@chriscoplan.bsky.social

Today I said goodbye to my dear sweet Gorp/Blade. For 10-plus years he was my best friend and faithful companion. He was dumb as hell but he loved with all the heft and earnestness in the world. He went out doing what he loved most: eating and falling asleep. I love you, my sweet summer child.

I think something like this feels extra unsettling. As if the CO market/approach/whatever needed more holes shot in its hide.

Amy "Thunderjam" Chase@amythunderjam.bsky.social

I've had multiple instances as well of publishers pitching me a short logline/unfinished idea, and looking to me to re-pitch it to them fleshed out, while they maintain the rights for having the idea in the first place. So what looks creator-owned is really WFH. Wonder if that'll become a new norm.

Great thread. I will add that all of this comes at a time when I think creators are genuinely taking huge swings creatively (and landing more often than not — even failures feel vital), which makes these developments all the more depressing and confounding.

Zac Thompson@zacthompson.bsky.social

Despite record sales across the industry the state of the creator-owned market seems dire right now. Multiple publishers are scaling back their line, a few don't seem to know what they want, others have pretty much shifted focused to entirely licensed books. It's weird!

Starting October off right with a little Scream! action.
