One of my favorite pieces we've published all year.

Salvation South@salvationsouth.com

At 18, in Damascus, Karim Shamsi-Basha watched "To Kill a Mockingbird" and crossed an ocean to the America he saw in it. Mary Badham, who played Scout, and Cecilia Peck, Gregory's daughter because friends on the movie set as children. Their new new play will soon premiere in Birmingham.

Barbara Y. Phillips is a force of nature. Here's some Sunday reading that matters.

Salvation South@salvationsouth.com

She helped renew the Voting Rights Act in 1982, sat at Fannie Lou Hamer’s kitchen table in Ruleville, and became the first black woman hired onto the tenure track at the University of Mississippi law school. At 77, she has chosen her ground, and it is the same ground.

This is a must read, because this young man, Mr. Girtley, is remarkably talented, and I was so proud @salvationsouth.com could publish this story, with characters and dialogue that never ring a false note.

Salvation South@salvationsouth.com

The Salvation South team believes this is one of the finest short stories we've seen from a young writer in months. Herbert Girtley Jr. is remarkable.

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

On the liturgical calendar of The Episcopal Church, May 13th is the feast day for Blessed Frances Perkins, the woman who served as the Secretary of Labor in FDR's cabinet and who envisioned and personally drafted much of the legislation to create such New Deal programs as Social Security,

Talking to Bill Ferris is one of my favorite things.

UNC Press@uncpress.bsky.social

An exciting new series from @salvationsouth.com presents conversations with Bill Ferris to celebrate 50 years since the release of his four landmark film documentaries 🙌 Read or watch the first conversation about GIVE MY POOR HEART EASE 👇 www.salvationsouth.com/give-my-poor...

Tracy Thompson's writing and research are important. Her book "The New Mind of the South" felt like a great awakening to me. So I'm proud @salvationsouth.com today gets to publish her new piece about the grief you feel when your home literally disappears. www.salvationsouth.com/solastalgia-...

salvationsouth.comSolastalgia - Salvation SouthPleasant memories of places past: that’s nostalgia. But what do you call the grief that comes when the modern world leaves nary a trace of the place that raised you?

@salvationsouth.com is looking for 1, 2 avid readers who care deeply about the American South to volunteer to read submissions—nonfiction, journalism, fiction, and poetry. If you're interested, please send me a DM, a chat message, whatever you call those things here on Bluesky!

Yesterday, across from Ebenezer Baptist Church—just days before MLK Day, when crowds will gather to honor justice and equality—a homeless man was killed during an encampment sweep by an Atlanta city vehicle. These sweeps are cruel, brutal, and utterly counterproductive in addressing homelessness.

gpb.orgDeluxe: Me and The DevilOn this episode of Salvation South Deluxe, we're debunking the Robert Johnson myth. We'll explain how the "deal with the devil" story overshadowed a blues genius and led to exploitation of his legacy.

If you haven't heard @salvationsouth.com with @chuckreece.bsky.social and Jake Cook yet, I suggest Debunking the Robert Johnson myth: how the "deal with the devil" story overshadowed a blues genius and led to exploitation of his legacy. My husband is a guitarist and we this is a story.
