🌳 Volunteers recently cleared back Cherry Laurel along the laurel tunnel at Ballinakelly Wood. By the end of the day the path was once again easily walkable, with a noticeable increase in light reaching the woodland floor. A great day's progress against one of the reserve's biggest challenges. 🌿

'Open to anyone' - More hunters needed to cull booming deer population. A shame the image shows native red deer, rather than sika or other alien invasives, but good to see this message finally starting to gain traction. share.google/GB8nZPtNnH3L...

It is 7 years since Coillte committed to removing the plantation surrounding the Derryclare forest in Galway but still not a single conifer has been removed. We now have national restoration targets for 2030 but we'll need get a lot quicker if these are to be met www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Potentially Sphagnum divinum growing in a very nice and quaking bog in Coolvoy bog SAC, Donegal. Can't say I am certain as I find the field characteristics tricky but based on pore sizes in the branch leaves I would place my bet on S. divinum

Hypericum canadense, Irish St. John's wort, growing in a soakway/flush in na hUilinní, Conamara, a decent extension to its current distribution and a new species for me Lus Naomh Eoin Gaelach (?) ag fás in uisceadán i ngaeltacht Chonamara - na hUilinní, suíomh nua dhó agus rud nua dhomsa

Happy Summer Solstice - the sun has just about set here in NE Ireland. A beautiful but solitary Greater Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) helped mark this bittersweet day. Common blue taking a rest in the long sun and lovely views of my beautiful home. Go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo aríst

Six different tree species clumped together in an area of natural regeneration on the edge of Coill Sheanadh Gharráin in Connemara. No forester would plant Oak, Birch, Willow, Rowan, Holly & Hazel like this. Rewilding is crucial, because we can neither predict nor replicate what nature will do.

Was lovely to be invited by NPWS to give a talk in Laragh for biodiversity week. Always lovely to talk moss and people stayed and looked at some samples afterwards :-)

Day two of the BBS meeting in Slovenia. First a visit to the Juliana Botanic Gardens and then a walk down the Soca valley where we saw many interesting plants including Mannia triandra, seen here with Marchantia quadrata.

Trichophorum cespitosum, Northern deergrass from a Schoenus Campylium stellatum dominated fen in na Monga, Conamara during the week. Also growing with Sphagnum platyphyllum and an unidentified Utricularia, lovely relevé indeed. Associates in post below (1/2)

Five years on & my gardens are an absolute paradise - 100s of orchids, 1000s of grasshoppers and so much more! All I did was plant native wildflowers plus mow ot twice a year, removing clippings each time. Low maintenance ✅ Amazing for wildlife ✅ What’s not to love?! 🌱❤️

The most worrying aspect of this article on illegal selling of alien invasive plants is the attitude of this nursery owner: “Nurseries throughout the country have been growing plants ... the damage has already been done. If you call it damage.” #conservation #SpeirGorm www.rte.ie/news/2026/05...
