I'm *wildly* excited to announce that my new book, 'Setting the Land Free – Visions of a Rewilded Ireland', will be published by Hachette on 27 August. We have a stark choice re our collapsing nature: the usual timid, token gestures, or real, gutsy ambition. This book makes the case for the latter.

Absolutely brilliant to see. Yet fossil fuel use and emissions are STILL increasing, because capitalist economies require endless growth. On a finite planet, that can only end one way. Without system change, much of our efforts are little more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth. Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

Here in Glengarriff, previous lower browsing levels allowed a very uniform subcanopy of holly to develop beneath old oaks. There's no ground flora, due to little light penetration, and ever increasing invasive sika deer. Natural predators would greatly help return needed balance to ecosystems.

Indeed. The same is true for Ireland where @irishrainforest.bsky.social has been calling for a complete overhaul of financial incentives for farmers. Farmers in Ireland are PAID with taxpayer money to farm with loss making sheep. The exact sheep destroying Irish forests every single day.

Absolutely FABULOUS news for all life on Earth, especially the Amazon rainforest!!!! Despite the fascists playing every dirty, cheating trick in the book to steal this election, the people of Brazil saw through the lies. So, so, happy and relieved this morning 🇧🇷 👏 share.google/UdpzcSkD5us7...

The Casuarina on the riverbanks and bays of D’harawal Country (NSW south coast) is the Grandmother Tree: in the Dreaming story, older women who made string from its needles became these trees, and the wind rustling their needles is the chatter of grandmothers Such knowledge connects you to place.

Bird flu came out of industrial poultry farming, and has been devastating wild bird populations ever since. Via industrial fur farming, it now threatens to do the same to us. Animal farming is one of the greatest dangers to life on Earth.

ProPublica@propublica.org

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

In Irish, aspen is 'crann creathach' – trembling tree – because of how its leaves quiver and rustle in the wind. One of the most palatable tree species to deer, sheep, etc, its very distinctive, evocative sound is sadly now uncommon in Ireland.

Great thread and debate. land sparing/sharing, rewilding must be balanced with farming production while reducing food import dependency to support national resilience. Dietary shift has to be a big part of this

Call out lifeless countryside? "Farmer bashing" Call out deadzone tree plantations? "You hate foresters" Call out our empty seas? "You're attacking fishermen" Call out our trashed National Parks? "You're denigrating park rangers" This is how they try to shut down any dissent to nature's dying.

Dom Phillips on “fascist” Bolsonaro and his “more extreme” sons. I look back on WhatsApp messages of the murdered British journalist from the last time a member of Bolsonaro family led in Brazil’s presidential election. Prescient then, pertinent today. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...

Totally agree - and a compromise would mean some proportion of the land for nature. We need food, so we need nature friendly farming, but we also need some land that is not farmed. We expect it of other countries so why not us. :)

The compromise is having farmland to provide food, and rewilded areas for nature. As things stand, it's only the first and none of the second. But you think that's compromise? Nature would disagree.

Reiver14@reiver14.bsky.social

As with everything, there is compromise, just no-one wants to look for it.

South Terrace, Cork city centre: polypody, heart's tongue and maidenhair spleenwort ferns spring from a damp old brick wall. If your eyes are open to it, we're surrounded by the relics of our lost natural rainforest heritage.

The equivalent of every soul in the towns of Athlone, Portlaoise, Kenmare and then some combined being wiped out. Imagine the reaction if so many were murdered in a terrorist attack. Yet fossil fuels continue to be massively subsidised, and emissions to rise, because NOTHING must limit profit.

At least 50,000 heat deaths last summer. Imagine nearly all the people in a mid-size town dying over the course of a few months; Freising in Bavaria, or St. Pölten in Austria ...

I think a big problem is that Joe Public just doesn’t understand that landscapes like Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons aren’t natural- and they don’t see anything lacking.

But guess what? Farmers could be bringing BACK nature and thriving if paid to rewild Foresters could be producing timber AND natural wildlife habitat Fishermen would benefit HUGELY from no-take MPAs Our NPs could be spectacularly rich, if rangers were properly supported. There are no excuses.

Let’s eradicate our life support systems – that’ll teach the liberals! It's not just about giving destructive industries what they want, important as this is. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro will kill the planet out of a vengeful desire to hurt. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Despite arbutus fruit covering the ground in parts of Glengarriff Nature Reserve, little regeneration results due to invasive sika deer. Sourcing wild-shot venison helps our native ecosystems. It's also delicious, and unlike most other meat is free of chemicals, antibiotics or welfare issues.

Even if over 323,000 Irish households weren't in arrears with their electricity bills (they are), this would be bonkers.

Enough renewable electricity to power almost half a million Irish homes was lost during the first nine months of this year because of limitations on the electricity system.

By moving to the “center,” Democrats have failed to fight the forces that led us to Donald Trump: widening inequality, economic insecurity, and the unchecked political power of corporations and the rich. Political centrism is nonsense. There is no middle ground between democracy and oligarchy.

Far Right extremists, Reform UK, constantly demonstrate their ignorance. Replace Muslim with Catholic & read their statement. The sad thing is that in the 16th & 17th C this was exactly how Catholics were spoken of. 40% of Irish died as a result. This is the language of religious war & instigation.

One of the easiest ways to ensure homes for insects is to avoid being too tidy in gardens and green spaces. Letting a patch of grass grow long (good for nesting bumblebees), leaving dead stems where they are over winter, and having a wild corner will all help boost insect populations 🐝
