I’ll be striking today too. Because I support the living wage and a pay rise that keeps up with inflation.

We are valuable. We are not expendable. Your buildings are empty without us. #UnitedOnStrike

Brendan Larsen from Ngāmotu in Aotearoa and a member of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society took this stack over a couple of hours and estimates 14000 satellite trails. This is how bad it is now, it's set to get much much much worse - and then we lose Low […] [Original post on river.geek.nz]

One of the ‘anti-Net Zero brigade’’s favorite myths is that the UK is only responsible for 1% of the world’s emissions. What should we bother lowering our emissions when China, the US and India emit so much more?

Wonderful to see that Helen De Cruz has won the International Society for Science & Religion's General Readership Book Prize for her work, Wonderstruck! This illuminating book reveals how wonder and awe are catalysts that can help us reclaim what makes life worth living. Learn more: buff.ly/IYNfe0Q

Kia ora friends! A big question- I’m looking for examples of my/ our work being used in teaching or other things. Especially work on whakataukī / mātauranga and ecology. Please DM or reply with examples including class, institution, & why - would so appreciate it! The evidence we rarely hear about 😆

I can’t predict the environment my kids will inherit. None of us can. But ecology has taught me a lot about living in an unpredictable world. For one: resilience doesn’t come from optimising for the conditions you expect. It comes from keeping different paths alive for futures you can’t predict.

It was a blast today at #Kew Gardens. Viewing cloaks like this #Maori one made from mountain daisy #tikumu leaves made a wonderful start to the morning. Huge thanks to Dr Mark Nesbitt and others for sharing their time 🧪

I was so so privileged to spend the weekend with Dr Adriana Humanes & her awesome partner in Newcastle. Adriana is an expert in #coral reef #restoration #ecology & heat tolerance. I was lifted by her work & future vision www.adrianahumanes.com. Critical research for ocean health. 🧪

I also 1) have very tired feet from walking > 10 km yesterday and 2) am deeply grateful for the #HomewardBound women & nonbinary ppl in #STEM network where I met Adriana nearly 10 years ago! #WomenInSTEM

An absolute joy to be at Université Paris-Saclay with @ivanjaric.bsky.social yesterday talking invasive species, cultural integration and more. A great group of PIs students and postdocs AND a walk through forest. Thank you for hosting - I hope to be back.

Meeting collaborators after years of working virtually is rewarding, and especially when they are not only brilliant, but work with kindness and inclusivity.

#BirdFlu🦠 #Aotearoa #NewZealand🌏 A few words from me in @aunz.theconversation.com on the need to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. bit.ly/4ziIxro #OneHealth🤲 #WildlifeVaccination💉 #ConservationGenetics🧬 #ThreatenedSpecies🦜 #Biodiversity

bit.lyNZ has spent years preparing for H5N1 bird flu. For some species, it may not be enoughWith H5N1 now in New Zealand, protecting the most threatened birds will involve difficult decisions, careful prioritisation – and sometimes chance.

Madi is a joy to talk history with! Her kōrero at a @tepunahamatatini.bsky.social writing retreat a few years ago when her book on Polynesian voyaging came out raised so many questions. Excited to hear what she does next.

“Even in my academic work, I try as much as possible to write in an accessible way, especially when you’re dealing with iwi whānau histories, because even if it’s for a PhD, it’s really for whānau as well.” — Ngāti Kuia historian Dr Madi Williams.

A humanities take on this government’s view of the #NewZealand science system.

This week’s proverb describes someone so miserly that he won’t spare even the littlest bit to help someone in need. 1/

At the International Society of #Ethnobiology conference in Cairns this week and what a joy to be with passionate folks determined to make a difference for their communities and Country.

Anyone know about these beautiful botanical cards from the DSIR? I bet Bill Lee would know something (not on bluesky)….but he’s also a great writer.

Phil Garnock-Jones@theobrominated.eurosky.social

Yes I have a few. They're very nice paintings (kōwhai, mānuka, ngutukākā) by the botanical illustrators on staff. I think the Director was trying to show Head Office that we were willing, but he almost certainly realised it was futile.
