"If anyone still takes Sisi’s pledge to leave in 2030 or his talk of political opening seriously here’s your answer: a court ordered Mada Masr, one of Egypt’s leading independent newsrooms, shut down; fined Lina Attalah EGP 3 million; and detained her until the fine is paid." @nancyokail.bsky.social

CIP has joined the global call to end the prosecution of Mada Masr editor-in-chief Lina Attalah and protect independent journalism in Egypt. "Egyptian authorities must end this prosecution and allow Lina and her colleagues to report freely," says @nancyokail.bsky.social

As the United Nations debates its next Secretary General, CIP reiterates its call that UAE's Minister Lana Nusseibeh (the "compromise" candidate backed by Trump) has a record of undermining international law, has ties to anti-democratic rulers, & is a bad fit internationalpolicy.org/publications...

internationalpolicy.orgCIP Statement on the Selection of the Next UN Secretary-General, Opposition to Nusseibeh Candidacy  - CIPThe UN needs a chief executive who stands against the wealthy and powerful who are driving violence and suffering, not one who shields them.

In September, CIP Fellow Allie Hansen attended the 3rd Review Conference on the Cluster Munitions Conventions. Despite the US's formal absence, she found a field haunted by US policy, with brazen arguments about failure rates alongside survivor testimony. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

A live tension at the conference is that the US still funds mine action, the cleanup of unexploded bombs, while not being a signatory to the CCM and even in recent years relaxing the rules on failure rates of weapons manufactured, exported, and developed. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

UXO Laos took attendees to see detonation of "eight BLU-26 bomblets: U.S.-made, U.S.-dropped cluster submunitions. The explosions were powerful, despite being small, about the size & shape of a baseball...making them particularly attractive to children" internationalpolicy.org/publications...

CIP President and CEO @nancyokail.bsky.social says the Trump admin's sanctions on the ICC are "the broadest attack yet on the one permanent tribunal able to prosecute war crimes, genocide and other crimes against humanity." Read the full statement here: internationalpolicy.org/publications...

internationalpolicy.orgTrump’s Sanctions on the ICC are an Assault on Justice & Security Everywhere - CIPUS Members of Congress should unequivocally condemn Trump's sanctioning of the International Criminal Court.

I wrote on Trump's delusional Saudi nuclear deal, the unfolding nuclear proliferation nightmare that everyone predicted, and how progressives can meet a moment that everyone else seems intent on ducking.

Center for International Policy@cipolicy.bsky.social

Trump’s proposed Saudi nuclear deal is both a nuclear proliferation risk and a self-enrichment scheme for the Trump family. Congress should reject it, argues @samratner.bsky.social of @winwithoutwar.bsky.social internationalpolicy.org/publications...

To respond to this new reality, progressives should embrace the goal of regional denuclearization for the Middle East, pushing to position the United States as an honest broker for de-escalating the nuclear arms race. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

internationalpolicy.orgRejecting Trump’s corrupt Saudi nuclear deal is only the start - CIPA full denuclearization of the Middle East offers a robust, progressive alternative to Trump's nuclear deal with Saudi.

In the wake of Trump’s Iran War, rejecting the deal may not be enough to prevent a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. As experts long predicted, Trump’s war shifted incentives for governments throughout the region toward acquiring a nuclear deterrent. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

This week, Win Without War Education Fund, A New Policy, and @cipolicy.bsky.social cohosted a panel for staff from 27 congressional offices on accountability for US officials implicated in the Gaza genocide. Hear what our panelists had to say ⬇️

Constant preparation for and anticipation of a coming great power war makes it harder for nations to imagine and plan for alternatives to armed conflict, while treating an unwanted war as inevitable, argues CIP Senior non-resident fellow Joanna Rozpedowski internationalpolicy.org/publications...

internationalpolicy.orgThe Price of Imaginary Wars - CIPA permanent wartime footing in spending and planning does not deter great power conflict but treats an armed conflagration as inevitable.

Iranian leadership signaled this week that it's willing to end the war, if Trump is willing to demonstrate reciprocal action and return towards the diplomacy of the MoU. There's a 7-day proposal on the table. CIP's own @negarmortazavi.bsky.social reports internationalpolicy.org/publications...
