WWWEF @scovillepf.bsky.social Fellow Allie Hansen recently went to Laos to attend the review conference for the treaty that bans cluster munitions. Read her analysis of the conference, and of how US policy helps perpetuate these dangerous weapons. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Senator Merkley is right -- this corrupt deal and its likely regional consequences should be a scandal, as our policy director @samratner.bsky.social lays out: internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Senator Jeff Merkley@merkley.senate.gov

We’re about to sleepwalk into a gravely dangerous nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, and not enough people are talking about this. Here’s what’s happening (thread)

I wrote on Trump's delusional Saudi nuclear deal, the unfolding nuclear proliferation nightmare that everyone predicted, and how progressives can meet a moment that everyone else seems intent on ducking.

Trump’s proposed Saudi nuclear deal is both a nuclear proliferation risk and a self-enrichment scheme for the Trump family. Congress should reject it, argues @samratner.bsky.social of @winwithoutwar.bsky.social internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Former State official Stacy Gilbert: It’s unforgivable that officials who gaslit the American people have been permitted to move on to jobs at elite institutions. That’s why it’s more important than ever to hold them accountable and prevent them from continuing to shape US foreign policy.

Former State Department official Stacy Gilbert: The Biden admin’s policy “seemed to be that we would gaslight the world and tell egregious lies in order to skirt the law” to continue arming Israel — a hypocrisy that compelled Gilbert to resign from a 20-year career in government.

Trump's horrific threats against people in Iran continue. Trump's war on Iran is already a disaster -- illegal, immoral, and destructive. Congress shouldn't give him another dime to continue it, and must rein him in before he makes good on his threats to turn it into a genocide.

Trump to the UN: "Do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly? Do I drive them into hell?"

Americans are paying twice for Trump’s war: once to fund the bombs devastating civilians abroad, and again through the higher prices at home the war is responsible for. This bill would make the Pentagon absorb those economic costs instead of families.

Saying that the mayor of NYC should be barred from memorializing the deadliest attack in his city's history -- which effected every New Yorker, regardless of their faith -- because he is Muslim is pure Islamophobia. We condemn Mr. Giuliani's comments, and all who try to use tragedy to peddle hate.

Trump’s “pivot” to the Western Hemisphere was never about security or human rights. It’s a resource grab, ultimately meant to line the pockets of Trump and his cronies while doing long-term damage to our neighbors.

It WILL deepen corruption. The agreement centers upon an unnamed private company, who will be given the second-largest amount of oil reserves of any private company in the world. Without transparency, there are endless opportunities for Trump to enrich himself.

It ISN’T to help the Venezuelan people. The deal gives the U.S. government direct control over 25% of Venezuela’s future oil reserves for decades. The deal will also likely require a long-term U.S. security presence in Venezuela, deepening U.S. militarization in Latin America.

The deal WON’T relieve U.S. families, who have paid over $700 in gas price increases since the war on Iran began. Experts predict that it will take nearly 10 years to bring oil into production from the fields handed over in the agreement.

But this war is deeply unpopular. Trump’s approval is cratering, and Congress has passed a war powers resolution ordering the president to terminate hostilities. It’s time for this disaster to end.

Last night, to salve Trump’s wounded ego, Senate Republicans attempted to “reverse” Tuesday’s historic war powers vote to end the Iran war with a maneuver that has all the legal authority of “I take backsies”. Worth a quick explanation 🧵

Despite Trump’s crowing and some media reporting that this is some kind of “reversal”, that’s not the case. They’re two different bills with two different legal arguments undergirding their authority. And Congress passed the more assertive of the two on Tuesday.

That evening, Republicans brought up a separate @kaine.senate.gov war powers resolution – a joint resolution that had been discharged from committee but was still in procedural limbo – for a hasty pre-recess vote. They defeated it on a “motion to proceed” by a narrow margin.

Unlike a joint war powers resolution (H.J.Res. / S.J.Res.), which the president can veto, H.Con.Res.86 is a concurrent resolution that works as a unilateral assertion of Congress’ Article I authority to decide when and whether the U.S. goes to war.

Until Tuesday, Congress had never passed a concurrent war powers resolution through both chambers – and we’re currently in untested constitutional waters, with dueling claims to authority from the different branches.
