I get lots of cold pitches for the podcast, most of them not aligned with the podcast's audience or values. I generally just delete them or mark them as spam. Today's was about an "AI-animated historical docudrama," and I don't know anything else about it because I NOPE'd out of reading further.

I really hate giving up on books, but I am finally tapping out on CRITICAL MASS by Daniel Suarez. There may be a good story buried in its 500 pages, but I am no longer willing to mine for it. I think I'll read the WIZARD OF EARTHSEA graphic novel next!

We talk about how the documentary came together, planning the three-week RV journey from Los Angeles to Chicago, the casting process, finding the right library leaders to interview, and the humor and lasting friendships formed on the trip.

In this special episode, I chat with some of the team behind the PBS series "Roadtrip Nation: Beyond Books,” director Leah Bleich, producer Lori Benitez, and featured student Maryan Liban.

We watched SUPERGIRL on HBO Max last night. While I'm sure it contributed, misogyny was not the main reason it did not do well in the theater. It was just not a very good movie. It wasn't BAD (especially by DC movie standards!), but just... meh.

I do not still have that comic book that is now worth a lot of money, but for me, its worth was measured in joy, not dollars, and I read it so many times that even if I still had it, it would be in terrible shape and "worth" nothing!

That was DC COMICS PRESENTS #26, which also featured a weird story where Robin (the only character I recognized) has a dream / vision of meeting a bunch of other young heroes to fight some blobby creature. The story confused me, but the art was cool.

Yes, I had stumbled upon the first appearance of The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, but I was so focused on the image on the left that I missed the historically significant image on the right.

One time at the drug store (remember when they sold comics on the newsstand?), I spotted a comic that showed Green Lantern creating a kryptonite rock with his power ring to attack Superman, and I HAD to know what was happening!!

I am difficult to please with comic book movies, and I have an even harder time connecting to DC movies because their whole universe just doesn't click with me. I like most of the core, iconic characters but once it veers off from there, I rapidly lose interest.

Superman (1978), Batman (1989), Batman Begins, and Wonder Woman are some of my all-time favorite superhero movies. Superman (2025) was a fun romp. I honestly haven't seen most other DC movies because they look so dark and dreary.

If I were in that room, I would pitch that the premise should be: It's time to play the music; it's time to light the lights. Indeed, it's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.

I am thrilled to share the logo for Seated and Screaming, by the immensely talented Chris Panatier. The podcast launches in October, and each episode I’ll sit down with a member of the horror community to hear about a horror (or horror adjacent) topic they’re just dying to talk about.

The five Simpsons lines I utter the most: -But all my stuff is there! -I ain’t fer it, I’m agin it! -That’s what they all say. They all say doh. -You won’t be needing THIS anymore! -You can’t make friends with salad! (Repeat x10)

WELKER: Do you think democratic socialists have a place in the Democratic Party? VAN HOLLEN: Yes they do as part of the debate. I think that those in the Dem Party who are afraid of a healthy debate are missing the point, because Democratic voters do not want a return to the pre-Trump status quo

New episode of the podcast will be out soon, hopefully. The summer reading series was a lot of work and burned me out, plus day job has been extra busy and it's the start of my kids' school year so... podcast delay!

In this new episode of the podcast, I chat with Alma Katsu about Incarnate, her CIA background into early social media research, AI’s threat to creativity and authenticity, the story’s parallels with Picture of Dorian Gray, and the diversity of voices in the current golden age of the horror genre.
