My new book 📕 The Story of Tudor Art 🌹 comes out on 25th September. It’s the first book ever (!!) to look at art from across the whole sixteenth century in England and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Thinking about organising some more public tours of the Cambridgeshire Collection store next year - give some more people the chance to look around the stacks. Would you be interested?

Doubly saddened to learn today that this means the BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers scheme has been indefinitely "paused". For me and for many arts & humanities academics, being an NGT was an opportunity to share ideas with BBC viewers and listeners, and it created so much great public scholarship.

Truly sad, though sadly not truly surprised, to see this. Free Thinking is a great programme, and for many years was a rare and wonderful space for the discussion of ideas by artists, activists, and academics, and somewhere that took research and thinking seriously.

I think about this essay a lot. About the low-level stress & aggravation literally everything is now designed to incite & maintain. What this constant emotional histamine response to our digital-logistical environment does to us, how it degrades our days. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forgiv...

Anyway, some seventeenth-century academics would probably be right at home in the modern university, like John Ellys aka The Devil of Caius (incidentally a friend of Newton).

Apparently the test of the modern university is whether it would accommodate a seventeenth century academic exactly as he was

However you're watching the eclipse, spare a thought for Taddeo Gaddi, author of the first real 'night scene' in Western art. Gaddi's obsession with light & celestial effects apparently caused him to stare too long at the 1330 eclipse, causing permanent sight damage. A warning from art history!

A rare and fragile survival from Viking-age York! A delicate silk cap made of hand-spun, undyed silk, c. AD 875-950 Silk was an exotic material imported via a vast network of Viking trade routes. Found during excavations at Coppergate in 1980. Yorkshire Museum 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology

A timeless Cambridge scene, one that Rupert Brooke would recognise: "Oh! there the chestnuts, summer through, / Beside the river make for you / A tunnel of green gloom, and sleep / Deeply above; and green and deep / The robot lawnmower glides beneath."

and what better example of the confluence of voyaging & pearl earrings in 1590s portraiture than this fabulous painting of Robert Dudley (the younger), currently on rare public display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London 🦪
