Politically conservative, Socially progressive (My politics are complex and nuanced.) Retired from a career that went many places I didn't expect. Avid cyclist. Married to the same brilliant woman since 1982. I'm comfortable with cognitive dissonance.

It's all just chimp poop now... I was in a conversation with a couple of friends of long standing (who have different political viewpoints from mine) and we agreed that, at a certain level, people are still chimpanzees who throw poop at each other when we're upset. A pleasant and interesting talk.

And I reflected back on some discussions on here, where any difference in point of view has been subject to ad hominem attack, and calling the divergent point (and it's presenter) inherently evil. We separate into tribes without knowledge or understanding. Chimp poop.

"So long as the focus remains solely on blaming either party, the despair that feeds this violence will only contaminate more of American life. When we try to find our politics neatly reflected back to us in each of these acts, we forget that the bullet itself is often the message."

I came over to BlueSky because I thought there was hope of a social media platform where people could discuss, disagree, and still be decent people about it. Lately I'm seeing a lot of dehumanizing, categorizing, speech, of the sort that turns another human being into a target.

As we continue to objectify the "other", to make accusations and assumptions of evil intent, to identify another person as inherently evil, simply because we disagree, we enable our own thoughts to walk the path to murder. If you're tempted to say "that was horrible, but..." you're already there.

Kennedy's HHS is rumored to be linking Autism to Tylenol use during pregnancy, according to the WSJ. SO, here's the question: Who in the Administration short-sold Kenvue (the company that makes Tylenol) this week?

Those of you who know me well know that I've been pretty active in #BikeMS, an annual series of cycling events in support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. MS is an autoimmune disorder, in which the myelin sheath that covers the nerves in the central nervous system develops gaps.

The effect is rather like the insulation in a wiring harness breaking down, and wires short-circuiting. Pain, numbness, paralysis, brain fog, vision problems ensue. MS won't kill you, but the side effects can. In the 20 years that I've been doing this, we've uncovered new treatments, but no cure.

I'm going to keep doing this as long as I am able, or until there is a real cure. The Society both funds research, and provides services and support for current MS patients. If you can, please sponsor me for the last ride on my schedule this year: events.nationalmssociety.org/participants...

As I look around, I see two kinds of Progressives, and two kinds of Conservatives. The first kind of Conservative fights like hell to keep things as they were, or as they remember them. The first kind of Progressive fights like hell to change something, or everything.

The second kind of Conservative sees the US Constitution as a set of abiding principles, that, if applied consistently, provide a structure for freedom and justice. The second kind of Progressive, looks at the abiding principles of the US Constitution and says: "Good. But we aren't there yet."

The first kind of Conservatives and Progressives are natural enemies, and scream at each other, but neither seems to care about how their goals are achieved. The second kind of Conservatives and Progressives are natural allies, and disagree about details, but both care about how things get done.

Ok, time to speak up. CNN and the BBC have been repeating a Hamas lie that 31 Palestinians were killed by the IDF at a food distribution point run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. For context, the GHF has distributed over 4.5 million meals this week, without incident & without Hamas.

Here's the statement from the GHF: "All aid was distributed today without incident. No injuries or fatalities. We have heard that these fake reports have been actively fomented by Hamas. They are untrue and fabricated.”

So, earlier I had made some posts about the importance of progressives turning down the vitriol, in order to avoid pushing Trump voters further into MAGA-dom. Ultimately, to flip some significant seats in Congress and end this insanity. I got shouted down by people who said they were unreachable.

Per a family member in East Tennessee who works at a BBQ joint, the Trumpers at work are MAD about Trump and Vance’s attack on Zelenskyy + the mass firing of veterans who work for the federal government. So that’s a data point

Interesting idea: Don't disengage from MAGA friends. Why? I've been reading "Revenge of the Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. In Chapter 4, he points out that in study after study, when the number of dissident voices in a group reaches 25% - 30% the thinking of the group as a whole shifts. 1/2

More dramatically, it shifts not towards, but TO the opinion of the dissident group. Boards of Directors with 1/3 women think differently. Classes of 1/4 minority students think differently. Only 1/4 to 1/3 of the voices... Not easy, and aggravation abounds, but worth a try? Whaddaya think? 2/2

So, what does a "non-MAGA" (i.e. genuine) Conservative believe in? There are a few differences, but this seems to be generally true: - Belief in the rule of law, and the Constitution. - Belief that those things should be interpreted to preserve individual liberty. 1/3

- Belief that hose things should be interpreted to preserve diversity. - Belief that a properly constructed economic system, where all costs are visible and individuals act in their own rational best interest, will do a better job of resource allocation than centralized planning. 2/3

Now, maybe it's just me, but it seems that, in our current situation, there is a lot of common ground between genuine Conservatives and the vast majority of Progressives that is being ignored, at our common peril. 3/3

Hey, does anyone know of a Canadian or Mexican equivalent of AliExpress? IIRC: Under US law, one can import up to $800 worth of goods per year for personal use and not pay tariffs.

I think it already is. But seriously. Don’t call them names. We want the door open for them when they realize the mistake they made. We are for a better America. Not a vindictive America

Hey Mark do you think voters remorse will ever hit the magat crowd I Doubt It

Well, this will be interesting. For only the 2nd time since my late teens, I am clean-shaven, a result of forgetting to put the guard on when trimming my beard. D'OH!

Ugh... I hate being sick. Can't (shouldn't) work out, and it messes up my training schedule for this summer's big bike rides. Nothing to do about it but rest, recover, and figure out the adjustments to my training schedule.

Ok, here's my idea: Elect as many Democrats and Never-tRump Republicans as we can in the midterms, and wait for tRump to do something impeachable. Who knows, we might actually get a Congress willing to do it's <expletive> job.

To quote Sarah Isgur: "Congress, do your job!"

HELL YEAH! Congressman Jim McGovern TORE Speaker Mike Johnson a new for saying it wasn’t “his place” to question Trump’s January 6 pardon. “Not your place?? WHO THE HELL’S PLACE IS IT?” He said. “How about you stand with the officers who protected you and not a reality show wannabe dictator.” 💙

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you review, cover, and criticize a blitzkrieg of anti-American totalitarianism? One order, one law, one executive act at a time. Pace yourselves.

My take on the current political situation: I figure that there's a good chance that the shiny will have worn off the Trump administration by midterms. That means we have only a few months to quit venting and start using intelligent, compassionate rhetoric to persuade the persuadable.

We stand a good chance of saving our Constitutional Democracy by getting real statespeople into Congress in the midterms. That will take getting a lot of people past a big freaking hump of cognitive dissonance, so find a way to criticize the Administration without castigating those who voted it in.

If you are a #cybersecurity person you know why apps from China and Russia need to be banned .. you also know why it is not a great idea to put Chinese products in your computer networks .. which is why a lot of Chinese companies have been banned from being in your networks ..

The Trump flip-flop on TikTok illustrates something that I've been arguing for a while. His supporters say he's "unpredictable," and that keeps our enemies on their toes. Nope. He's manipulable, and that gives our enemies an advantage. China is seizing that advantage now.
