The Trump admin is planning to say that being from Cuba (or any other travel ban country) is a "significant negative factor" that could lead to a denial of any of several discretionary immigration benefits (like green cards). Seriously; national origin discrimination as official government policy.

Hamed Aleaziz@haleaziz.bsky.social

Scoop: The Trump administration is planning a policy change that could make it harder for immigrants to get green cards and other approvals if they are from countries subject to the president’s travel ban, according to internal documents. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/14/u...

BREAKING: The full Ninth Circuit vacates last week’s 2-1 order granting DOJ a stay of the district court’s TRO in the case over Trump’s National Guard effort in Oregon. The court will rehear DOJ’s stay request w an 11-judge panel. Today’s order means Judge Immergut’s TRO remains in effect for now.

This video brought tears to my eyes. There is no justification for this behavior.

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)

Judge Crawford, summing up his finding on due process: "If the Government detained Mr. Mahdawi as punishment for his speech, that purpose is not legitimate, regardless of any alleged First Amendment violation. Immigration detention cannot be motivated by a punitive purpose."

MORE: The judge who released Mahdawi today, Obama appointee William Sessions III, compared the crackdown on student activists to the Red Scare and McCarthyism. "The wheel of history has come around again, but as before these times of excess will pass." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Poignant opinion by Judge Wilkinson in the Fourth Circuit.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

🚨NEW: 4th Circuit unanimously rejects Trump request to halt proceedings in Mr. Abrego Garcia's case. Reagan appointee Wilkinson writes that the Trump admin's position is "shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans ... still hold dear."

This is literally DEI.

Here's one of the many clarifying passages in the White House (notionally GSA) letter. It demands Harvard set up a system of political commissars who will enforce hiring and admissions set asides for MAGA luminaries and high school red hats.

Just making up the rules as they along, despite the fact that there already rules in place about this.

Josh Kovensky@joshkovensky.bsky.social

New justification for not returning Abrego Garcia just dropped, in a declaration from an ICE official: designating MS-13 as a terrorist org overrides the immigration court order barring his removal It's the latest in several shifting arguments for why the govt cannot and will not try to return him

More use of “tech” to enforce the whims of government. Not all that different from the strategy used in the recent SEVIS terminations. Forget about the law, just “delete”.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Breaking News: The Trump administration moved to cancel lawfully obtained Social Security numbers in an effort to pressure immigrants to “self deport” by cutting people off from using crucial financial services like bank accounts and credit cards, along with their access to government benefits.

My clients, colleagues, and I were blindsided by the sudden and immediate change in USCIS forms this week. Tens of thousands of applications could be affected. Thank you @aila.org and Benach Collopy LLP for bringing litigation to try to right this wrong. bit.ly/4itlvEV

So let me see if I have this right. Cancer research out, dictatorial control of the arts in? Afghans who assisted the U.S. out for refugee resettlement, white Afrikaners in? FEMA out, paper straws in?

We told you it was about whiteness. If it was clear enough before, it’s clear now. Trump paused the refugee program, but when it comes back online, it will focus on resettling white South Africans (Afrikaners) who are “victims of racial discrimination.” (Camilo/CBS) America has gone off the rails.

I made this point earlier about the birthright citizenship EO. By adopting the Heritage Foundation's maximalist position to also include children born to those here on nonimmigrant visas, they sabotaged the possibility some more NewsMax-pilled judges might buy some kind of "invasion" argument.

Brennan Center@brennancenter.org

By choosing the broadest, least constitutional bases for several of his initial executive orders, Trump seems to be daring the courts to block them.

Musk’s use of the word “delete” is so disrespectful, flippant, and smug.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Elon Musk called Wednesday for the elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one of the nation’s most powerful watchdog agencies, signaling it could be scrapped as part of a planned review of government spending ordered by President-elect Donald Trump.

Worth nothing that Judge Liman is a Trump appointee.

Between RFK Jr. and Bhattacharya, I really hope there’s not another outbreak of any kind.

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

NEWS: Trump to nominate Jay Bhattacharya for NIH and Jim O’Neill to be deputy secretary of HHS. Bhattacharya was one of the key people behind the Great Barrington Declaration, and O’Neill is a Peter Thiel guy.

So true.

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

Leonard Leo, Harlan Crow, Ginni Thomas, Martha Alito, John Roberts, Sam Alito, and Clarence Thomas love it when you blame Garland and Biden for the fact that the Supreme Court stopped the cases against Trump.

And just like, because of the outrageous Gaetz nomination, folks will now fall in line and say “this is much better”. But Bondi is still hyper-partisan and given to indulge Trump’s every whim.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Breaking News: After Matt Gaetz withdrew, President-elect Donald Trump’s new choice for attorney general is Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general.

It fits in with a faux image of neutrality that FedSoc likes to project, and it exactly parallels the false claims that originalism is about "finding law" not making it and that is is somehow politically neutral. That's why.

Elections do not—cannot—act as a substitute for criminal prosecution of a single person. That’s not what they’re meant to do. A campaign is not the same as an evidence- and rules-bound trial. The voters are an electorate, not a jury, and someone who runs a law blog should know the difference.

If, as many predict, Trump issues an EO prohibiting fed agencies from issuing passports to children born of undocumented immigrants, how would that work in practice? How many generations back will it go? Would anyone applying for a passport have to trace their ancestry back to Ellis Island, etc?

You are up to date.
