That's a wrap for my first Next Fest! Thanks so much for checking out the demo everyone!! Also, to answer a common question I've gotten - yes, the demo will still remain up even though the event is over, so if you haven't gotten around to it this week, you can still try it out any time!

When you start working in video games, no one tells you how how many custom store-page assets you have to modify your artworks into. At this point, I've frankensteined together so many illustrations, Mary Shelley would sue me for copyright infringement.

i did some music for this project (the trailer music as well!) give it a try!

i dont think this needs to be said or stated by me of all people but please know that there will never be any generative elements or consultation of AI in anything i make. it seems to be the new fad to use now given its capabilities, but i have zero interest in it for the games or music i create.

Beyond all of the ethical issues, my biggest problem with all the vibecoded things coming out is this: Not knowing how what you're making works is an extremely dangerous path to go down.

been writing a lot of MIDI stuff lately for a personal project. thought i'd share it here ANTIHISTAMINE.mid (10/7/26)

don't flame me, but if there was a new smash that rebooted the roster and could only include 35 characters, this is what i would choose for a hypothetical Smash 6. how'd i do?

bowling is such a genius social event. the exact balance between like 10% activity to provide purpose to the 90% hanging out and drinking. bowling was the original friendslop

Wendy Carlos should be on the 20 dollar bill. There should be a 50-foot-tall, solid-gold statue of her in Pawtucket. You should be able to buy all her albums in any format you want and a line of custom branded synths. She should be a household name along with Bob Moog.

I think a lot about why Wendy Carlos’ albums are out of print and her wonderful website is now reserved for having a friend of hers tell people to leave her alone. It’s so fucking heart breaking what the world does to trans women

bombchu girl smoke break Never posted this one. I wasn't satisfied with it back in 2024 because I thought it looked flat. I come back to it now and enjoy it much more. #mariopaint #snes #pixelart #pointillism #nintendo #LoZ #oot #majorasmask #smokebreak #neon

i don't know if i entirely agree that difficulty and accessibility are inherently linked. when i design games with one difficulty, it's intended to appeal to all players, even those who like video games and don't find themselves particularly good at them. some developers don't design this way!

loren schmidt@lorenschmidt.bsky.social

the idea of games with a single difficulty level is so weird. it just doesn't make sense. how are devs supposed to magically target you, perfectly, sight unseen? people have all kinds of individual strengths and habits and weaknesses and accessibility needs? that's just not how it works.

there is a lot of intentional obstacle that comes from one difficulty mode, or a "Normal or Hard" setting. i think friction being mistaken for unintuitive or not designed for accessibility is a huge issue in games i see developed lately, especially when there are good accessibility options.

I always feel like an outsider in these games difficulty discussions, because I don't finish most games & never have. Growing up playing NES, I never internalized that games are even meant to be finished. I get as far as you can, eventually I stop playing, maybe I come back, maybe I don't.

Unused graphic found in the files of Mario Superstar Baseball, possibly used as a placeholder for the title screen. It features crude sketches of Mario and Luigi seemingly made in MS Paint and the text "ルイージの兄野球", which translates to "Luigi's Older Brother Baseball".

Neat feature for the new version of Torneko's Mystery Dungeon that I don't see in many games anymore: Youtube/Twitch stream chaos. Seems like a rudimentary implementation and I don't know how many "big" Western gaming personalities will even stream the game, but I like stuff like this.

Remember how wind waker is a game about the toxic power of nostalgia and how you have to let all the old people drown at the bottom of the ocean so you can build something new and better than the bullshit they're trying to keep alive to your detriment Anyway

my interest in the ocarina of time remake genuinely hinges entirely on how Dead Hand will look. i never played the 3DS version because they made it look worse

Replying to @superultra64.bsky.social

If you wanna develop one, be my guest- but it's become a hyper saturated genre in record time Kudos to those who iterate on the original formula, but most don't really do anything with it. Guess it's the nature of things when there are so many titles releasing under that system

these worms are gettin' in the dev brains too. even indie devs or small companies you will see canceling a project or changing scope dramatically when they reveal and don't get tens of thousands of wishlists right away. you have to stick at stuff!!

this will be the first year in my few years of going to pax west that i won't be attending. sorry to all my lovely friends who were expecting me in seattle this year. let me know if it's fun, ok?

It's a shame about all the BS surrounding GTA VI, because putting it back into Vice City is the first brilliant thing they've done in a really long time. I don't think these games actually benefit all that much from the hyper inflated budgets they carry; in fact it seems it kind of makes them worse.
