Talarico is going to do and say bad things but before you comment, make sure you're framing your criticism with your answer to the question would it be better for Talarico to win or for that dirtbag Ken fucking Paxton to win

Vibecession Forever@ghazelleberner.bsky.social

My issue with lots of the big accounts on here is that everyone on this app knows you disagree with Talarico. No shit. You aren’t adding anything by saying, “wow, sir! Bad take!” If you genuinely think people shouldn’t support Talarico, just say that. If you don’t, you need to be more intentional.

For thousands of years the ability to speak and especially to write fluently was semi-consciously used as a (very problematic!) proxy for intelligence. About four years ago a few companies disproved by counterexample any linkage between fluency and intelligence. A lot of us are still catching up.

the responses to this post are kind of a lot i deleted something earlier about how, counter to what i learned in linguistics class, it seems like language leads thought sometimes, but here goes

It literally doesn’t mean anything! We’re writing about software. My spreadsheets weren’t having orgasms, they were recalculating.

this is probably wrong and the people arguing that using terms which clearly invoke human emotion, thought processes, etc genuinely don't understand that there's something quite different going on with LLMs and the tooling around them

sorry to any pals who are Timbers fans but it was pretty awesome to have been asked by the kiddo "who's going to score first and who's gonna win", have a whole conversation about predictions vs results, and then get to see Austin FC win 1-2 that Svatok goal was a fun watch

my pregame explanation was "Austin's had a hard time on the road and Portland has done well at home, it's looking likely Portland will win this one" almost forty seconds before the announcers said the same thing so I got to look very Dadly in that moment

sad . . . . . . pretty funny headline though

Dissent Magazine@dissentmag.bsky.social

Leadership at The New School has declared war on its own workforce, fired tenured professors, and shuttered whole departments. But what’s happening to the progressive university is an increasingly common story across all of higher education.

idk about the math (not at all a criticism, I genuinely don't know the numbers) but spending money to prevent voter suppression in HTX is a fantastic idea

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

If you could reduce voter suppression and discouragement in Harris county by 10% below what it normally is? Talarico cannot lose. $1 donated to an org that fights voter suppression, is more valuable than $1 donated to more campaign ads.🤷🏿‍♂️ Every voter that wants to vote, should be able to.

trying to maintain the peace found in not chasing after the thoughts directly resulting from reading the words of stubbornly intolerant people who have influence and instead focusing on questions like "what is the effect of other people's belief or tolerance for these deranged rants"

Without this basis, when you say, “This is the mountain,” or “This is my friend,” or “This is the moon,” the mountain will not be the mountain, my friend will not be my friend, and the moon will not be the moon itself.

"Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe." lol, sure, IBM probably tried to make the same point but the facts stand

to the cute couple examining and discussing the look of various Meta Glasses in the Best Buy last night: yes, when you heard me exclaim "ooh, Pervert Glasses" so loudly I was very aware you could hear me

and when I followed it up about forty seconds later with "I'm just amazed anyone would want to wear Pervert Glasses, what are they thinking" slightly more loudly I was aware you could still hear me then

I remember this one time I was helping someone who had lost their home when their neighbor's spouse torched their house and the fire spread get clothes from the donations we provided to anyone who needed them.

This was in the mid-2000s, but it's not like things have gotten easier for people who've lost their IDs, possessions, for any reason, in the years since. We went to every church in town, all the government services, everything takes time and money and if you're caught in the cold good luck.

Pretty much any time someone is in a situation where they don't fit in the boxes the form has to tell our stories things become ridiculously difficult, often for no defensible reason. Most of us are vulnerable to chance, constrained somehow in ways that make us vulnerable to something similar.

No shelter in the area could take them, due to circumstances they were hundreds of miles from family and friends, and it took around two months for them to start rebuilding things because of how comprehensive their losses were.

if you look at that photo and think "huh something looks off about that dog's shape" i assure you that's not a trick of the camera, he was causing some kind of time-space distortion in the general dog-bed area

a classmate in a college physics course started crying when they learned that the bohr model of the atom with little balls zooming around a nucleus isn't a direct representation of how electrons work, it was powerful to witness "why would they lie to us for all these years"

still feel this way about pi tbh

on the one hand i got where they were coming from on the other i clearly remembered high school textbooks saying electrons as particles in planetary orbit was a convenient visualization plus the whole "so... turns out many dinosaurs were feathered" thing
