Out for the evening to see Shitfaced Shakespeare. Juliet broke into the theatre attic, nicked a monkey puppet from another play, brought it into the balcony scene, told Romeo to fuck off and started making out with it until the director had to take it off her

Are you telling me that the guy who comes on BBC news to discuss tech stories doesn't know what PHP is? You are? Thank you for telling me that. I assumed as much - it's obviously completely unremarkable and fine - but it's nice that you told me and confirmed my assumption :) you're a good friend

it's fun that Townfall has a section-based speedrun clock built in. i mean, i probably won't use it again but it was fun going for the 4-hour completion achievement with it in the corner pretending like i was actually a professional speedsman

i got about 2h15m in the end using the raygun. completely different game, just sprinting through and blasting stuff. hitting the Weight with a flare whenever he notices you and just sprinting away laffin

Watched the 28 Days Later 4K release. They did it: they made it look Not Completely Awful. Like, it's obviously not razor-sharp but it's not Motorola Razr sharp any more and you can actually see shit in nearly all the scenes

Another visit from that detective yesterday. He has a wonderful imagination, but as always there's one thing he hasn't considered. If he comes around again tonight I'll just politely inform him that he really is becoming a nuisance. Then I'll be able to have my dinner party tomorrow evening in peace

Finished Townfall this evening with Sam. I have a lot of the same criticisms other people have had, but it's still some of the best Silent Hill in ages. It's a bit too derivative of Silent Hill 2 in places (that's Pyramid Head, bro), but it's a solid revisit rather than pale imitation.

God, this is good. There are bits of it that don't quite hit for me, but that *pause*. The slow fade of expression into the distant stare. You can *feel* the abyss suddenly yawn open inside his mind.

Got to the part in Townfall where Terry O'Quinn does a Silent Hill Die Hard, just running around annihilating bitches with a shotgun. An unexpectedly delightful change of pace

Walking home at night through the fog after spending the evening playing Silent Hill with Sam. Good thing I have no traumas or mental conditions. The monsters are all just giving me high fives

finally getting around to playing Shadow of the Erdtree. pretty good so far. it is insane that you have to beat one of the hardest optional bosses in the main game to access it. wild confidence in the market

folks, i can report that this movie I'd never heard of until a couple of hours ago is absolutely jaw-dropping. watch it at your earliest convenience

ah, good, they've made firefox look different. that's what i wanted. and rather than match my computer's non-distracting, low-key dark grey colour theme, they've successfully guessed that i want this one app to be *intensely* purple.

introduced my new shadowrun character Nox tonight. she is a very professional, skilled combat specialist and asset to the team. also if she misses one of her daily injections she starts sweating and exhaling extremely lethal poisons that paralyze and kill anyone nearby. on top of that, she's French

the original idea was for her to be a toxic mage but the rules for toxic mages in SR5 are "you get access to two really shit spells and you have to be evil and stupid and live in a toxic waste dump". so now she's a sort of metagenic lizard/poison-dart-frog girl. which is better.

Saw the new Resident Evil. Great fun. My favourite bit is where the guy checked the hospital map, plotted a route through the maternity ward, and the entire cinema made an "oh, no" noise in unison

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

Seeing a five quid powercard in a Silent Hill game is mangling my mind more than any of the faceless shambling horrors.

couldn't resist reading the Doomsday leak. it does sound ridiculous in places but any summary of a Marvel plot sounds ridiculous, i'm not worried about what it sounds like outside of its medium. I *am* quite surprised that it sounds like they're sticking pretty close to the comics in one aspect.

really I don't have any expectations for Doomsday, high or low. I am there primarily because I want to see a good adaptation of Dr. Doom. I don't know that it'll be one, I don't even know that a good film version is possible. but Doom is the best Marvel villain and deserves his shot.

he is just comicsy-as-fuck, though. it feels so hard to try and do a "real" version of him played by an actual human. he's a very silly original concept who's been shaped into something good over the years. it's hard to introduce him as a serious guy in the first instance. His name is *Doctor Doom*.

The other nice surprise about Townfall is that Terry O'Quinn is in it. I had no idea beforehand and was trying to place the voice (thought it might be Tobin Bell for a second) and then the opening credits played and it's John Locke :)

"hey zoe. how's things, considering recent happenings?" "you mean the current situation? not great." "ah. that's understandable in light of everything that's going on." "yep. i've hidden my back door key in the fishmonger's, due to the crisis." "what else can you do in such trying times"

as always i'm just pleased that there's new Silent Hill and it's not bad. it may never be groundbreaking again, but this "active and competent" era is a damn sight better than the "mediocre, then dead" one.

(you do figure out pretty quickly that it's a lightly-repainted Critical Path Indicator, but it's *just* cryptic enough that it works. It'll point you in a direction but you still have to pay attention, use and understand your map. you do feel like you're involved, not just following markers.)

ultimately the atmosphere's good but SH lives or dies on the story, so too early to tell. the mystery's engaging so far but there is a bit of "hey, will one of you fuckers please say *something* specific about what happened in one of the 5000 letters, emails and voicemails you're leaving each other"

And in particular it is a coastal Scottish village, which the main character is returning to. so the second I saw the outline of the town rooftops through the fog I was like "oh my god, it's Silent Hill: Local Hero"

The little mini-TV you get in place of the radio is nice. It makes enemy tracking a bit more involved, is used in puzzles and as a cool diegetic way of delivering story and direction. also i had one of those little TVs so it gets further points from me.

so far it's not doing anything groundbreaking mechanically, it's a pretty straightforward first-person hidey-horror with very resource-limited combat options. but it's fantastically presented and the attention to detail in the town goes a long, long way to making the slightly rote stealth enjoyable

St. Amelia is just a really loving recreation of a UK town in 1996. We were both constantly going "oh, shit, one of *those*, remember those?" i mean, to the point that occasionally it's like "man, I wish this monster would piss off so I could go and admire that period-accurate cash machine"

Finished the RE3 remake tonight with Sam. I hated it when it first came out but every time I revisit it I come a little further around to it. It's not a good version of the original, but once you get past that it's a fun, pacy little action movie. It's short but that means it never loses momentum.
