My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Yikes. This is just offloading the important bits of your life. It's not even the cognitive bit (which I think is probably quite bad) that's the issue in this case. This is just giving up an opportunity to do love. That's... well, gosh, I guess it's dystopian.

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

και στα δικά μας, πήγα να πω, και κοίταξα την Ελληνική αριστερά…με έπιασε ένα γέλιο υστερικό και δεν είπα τίποτα.

Of course a win for non-authoritarian leaders or movements does not automatically mean all problems are solved or that authoritarian forces can't come back in future. But it is worth maintaining hope and optimism, because if people succumb to nihilism and apathy then democracy cannot survive.

“It’s not left versus right anymore. It’s democracy against backsliding,” said Mariana. “It’s something bigger, it’s not for the left, it’s a movement for Brazil,” Regina added. “And once you’re awake, it’s difficult to go back to sleep.” www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/liv...

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Grim but necessary reading.

On food, identity and European culinary heritage. From Champagne to olive groves in Puglia and Catalonia, a French wine house in Kent, and a village in Epirus. New piece with a fun fact/small exclusive I got out of the European Commission

For a few years now I’ve been floating the idea that theatre is the art form of the future because sharing physical space with people is increasingly precious. Here’s a new reason: there’s no generated slop on the stage. #TheatreIsHuman

Woke up to pictures of their grinning faces and a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Not really my cookies of course, but the (now classic) Cook’s Illustrated ‘thick and chewy’ recipe.

An art historical gloss: for those who don't know, Guernica was held by MoMA in NYC for more than 40 years, as Picasso stipulated the painting should not return to Spain while Franco was still in power. It was finally unstretched, rolled up & sent back to Spain in 1981, as shown in this video

This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.

Voyager 21 travelled on through the cold depths of space, crossing the outer reaches of the solar system, onwards into unknown regions. It carried within its hold four dead bodies, all of them carefully preserved, but slowly decaying. Our final message, our final poem.

So good to talk to Charlie, who is brilliantly doing his part to puncture the AI bubble (both its financial and marketing/mythological manifestations)

IT'S TECH OLIGARCH END TIMES WEEK ON GALAXY BRAIN feat. @naomiaklein.bsky.social & @astra.bsky.social. Tried to have a big conversation about elite impunity and the way SV built tools that they argued would bring people together/get rid of gatekeepers. but consolidated power/control for them.

There are so very many things! But let’s get personal. The whole class of medications that keeps my autoimmune symptoms at bay was only invented about 25 years ago, and the particular one I take is less than ten years old.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Dudes would literally invent a globally ecocidal machine to tell them how awesome they are all day rather than respect women and go to therapy.

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

This is a cat colony in an abandoned house. I made them nervous but they clearly have regular interaction with humans. There was clean water in three different containers and ample food in two outside the gate, and even the skittish ones I couldn’t photograph looked healthy and well-groomed.

The most crucial event to be ritually enacted prior to the...construction of [Bangkok] was the installation of the [city pillar], which coincided with the establishment of a new dynastic horoscope...Linked with the Indic linga cult associated with...Shiva as well as...Tai cults of tutelary deities

Now onto Bangkok: Place, Practice, and Representation, a keystone of Bangkok urban studies It begins with a question asked by W.S. Maugham during a visit to Bangkok in 1923: "And who can so describe a city as to give a significant picture of it? It is a different place to everyone who lives in it."
