Yikes. This is just offloading the important bits of your life. It's not even the cognitive bit (which I think is probably quite bad) that's the issue in this case. This is just giving up an opportunity to do love. That's... well, gosh, I guess it's dystopian.

cool, cool

Ah, geez. So I am not the guy who can write this book, but it's right there: a depiction of the slow disintegration of family life through emotional and conceptual offloading of basic affection. Almost certainly a prize or two in it for somebody. But I would choke SO HARD on writing it.

In terms of literary writing, this is my Kryptonite. I can see the book. I can pretty much plot it for you. I have zero interest in actually doing it unless I can take it one step further and BAM! now you're writing something that is just a little too weird for the gig. (Or a lot too weird, really.)

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

For the record: pry fitting from ceiling (but do not pull spider clips through plaster, v bad) and grip. Deploy needle nose pliers as adjustable screw driver (as advised by bsky) putting tips against flanges. Rotate! WIN!

For some reason, the government emergency advice forgot to include: Help support and nurture your local community because the best place to store food, is in your neighborhoods’ belly

I remember when I used to bring up the genetically engineered dogs they made in China (IIRC) with increased bone and muscle mass and wonder hopefully whether that was research that could be used to solve the health problems of humans in long-term microgravity.

I honestly don't know how you can look at the universe and go: "You know what we should do? We should make a death dog. That's totally going to help!"

Do you occasionally have that thing where you want to grab whoever is in charge by the face and shake them until they stop being a total idiot and fix things instead of breaking them more? Because I'm living with that all the time at the moment and it's making me tetchy.

Ten minutes later and I'm in deep Preppers UK territory and these folks are all modelling themselves on Rorschach eating cold beans in Owlman's kitchen with his mask rolled up to his nose. Also not helpful.

Also: how the hell do people get enough protein from pulses and so on without actually exploding? I cannot eat that many chickpeas in a day. I would rupture.

That aside, the guidance the government has supplied is crap, and the BBC's version is all "don't stock canned food with too much salt." My dudes, it's a THREE DAY CUPBOARD we're building here.

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

My immediate instinct was that this situation was full of hilarious potential, but after about a millisecond of consideration it's not funny *at all*.
