My latest World Cup dispatch: a tourist-filled city in the midst of hosting a 39-day megaevent is blanketed with smoke from a major structure fire that has burned for three days. And the mayor *just* declared an emergency
“62% of people with post-graduate college education believe humans are causing the Earth to warm, while only 56% of college graduates felt the same” This might be the most concerning to me. These numbers are unbelievably low. I don’t know how to make sense of it.
I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”
Big FDR fan here, but one thing that I didn’t quite appreciated about him until recently is that in today’s money he only had ~$60 million. The scale of the the unbelievable wealth at the top right now is off the charts.
FDR was by all accounts a nepo baby... He also, for all his faults, revolutionized the American welfare state.
Just got around to watching DEATH BY LIGHTNING on Netflix and man, what a disappointment that they resorted to played out Lost Cause propaganda to explain opposition to Grant. In reality he use his political capital to take on the white racist south and lost political support for that effort. Drivel

Tillis: You decided to kill that dog because you had not invested the appropriate time in training it, and then you have the audacity to say it’s a leadership lesson. You killed a goat and said it was behaving badly. You’re a farmer — you don’t castrate a goat, they behave badly.

MILLER: The US is using its military to secure our interests unapologetically in our hemisphere. We're a superpower. It's absurd we'd allow a nation in our backyard to become a supplier of resources to our adversaries TAPPER: Sovereign countries shouldn't be able to do what they want? M: *yells*

Replying to @jamellebouie.net
for starters, relying on the alien and sedition acts as the source for original public meaning runs into the little problem of the alien and sedition acts being so violently unpopular that they helped deliver the presidency to Jefferson and helped inaugurate the terminal decline of the federalists
The idea that if Brooklyn rents were at Dallas or Houston levels anyone would still choose Dallas or Houston over Brooklyn is kind of insane
While it’s probably true that housing costs are keeping people out of CA and NY, there’s this notion that middle America or the sunbelt will empty out and depart to Brooklyn if Brooklyn built more units, and I’m pretty sure the people who believe this all live in Brooklyn already
Why aren’t there more Civil War movies and tv shows? Who doesn’t want to watch Grant start from nothing and take over at Cairo down to Vicksburg? @jamellebouie.net
I feel like I just hallucinated. Did he really say “under any President, Democrat or Republican, they’re gonna care about American people’s healthcare and if they can put food on the table and try to bring down costs”??? Mark! No! Republicans DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIS. That’s the essence of the fight!
Mark Kelly notably declines to endorse Chuck Schumer as the leader of Senate Dems going forward
