I had an insight about why modern technology may slow down decision making.
More than 20 years ago I came up with the following: The measure of Bureaucracy is the distance between Responsibility and Authority.
Communication seems to be easier because everyone is carrying a computer in their pocket/
Many management structures have not moved authority closer to the responsibility because they believe modern tech makes communication quicker. However the decision invariably requires context, and the communication of context is the challenge. The time it takes someone to understand the context /
from the birth through growth, is exponentially proportional to their distance from the changes.
The solution is to agree on vision and principles and then to delegate authority and trust the people you hired and invested in. (You did invest in their growth, did you?)
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
Trump’s DHS appointees tried to get CISA to secretly hack a voting machine to find the flaws but DOGE had already fired specialists who could do it.
A former official, “they could keep it in their back pocket to invalidate any result they didn’t like.”

This is why debate classes at school should be mandatory.
Excellent parry by El-Sayed to a disingenuous question with an amazing flurry of follow-ups and take-down, plus a very pertinent history lesson about JFK.
😬 Katie Zacharia's first press briefing was brutally bad 😬
Trump managed to find a press secretary who can barely read, but she does have the number one qualification -- looking like Ivanka
Here's a supercut from Zacharia's first briefing, which made Karoline Leavitt seem like Ronald Reagan
That sounded like a GOP campaign update not an administration update...
Oh wait, this administration isn't actually doing the administration thing, only the spotlight and whatever it takes to not be consider for any humanitarian awards.

In the market of agentic mania ,apathy and hubris appear to be the primary competition for most anything involving solid engineering. Apathy: we don't need no stinkin' rigor, because we can iterate so quickly. Hubris: give me a swam of agents and enough tokens to stand on and I can move the world.
SAFe slop! The CEO prompts claude by speaking and sends a document to COO.
COO attaches the document and prompts claude and sends the new document to the CTO.
CTO prompts claude code and attaches the document, then zips the code and sends it to the Program Manager with instructions. 'Ship this'.
Hey @netflix.com, @primevideo.bsky.social, @disney+, @appletv how about some orthogonal design? I need a 'Never list', there are some shows I never want to see. Ever!
I have two questions:
1. Do you really believe the cost of using LLMs are going to stay where are now?
2. How large an increase in the cost of AI does your business model support?
I have read many well researched, well reasoned, and well argued papers regarding the nature of software engineering.
This is not one of them.

Won't it be wise to just shut down all gambling or betting.
As an industry, it creates nothing but misery for gamblers.
Being online means that misery isn't really visible.
Alberta and the NHL are good with this.
"Researchers in Ontario found a dramatic increase in emergency department visits in just the past few years, following the rapid growth of online gambling in that province and the legalization of betting on single sports events."

EPA published a Community Involvement Plan for the Triple Site in Sunnyvale, California (3 nasty toxic waste dump clean-up sites, including my old Apple office).

I don't fear superintelligence.
I said this at TED a decade ago, and I stand by that point of view today.
Among other things, any so-called super intelligence that could be an existential threat to humanity would also have to be super-embodied. And that's not going to happen.

I think there is a need for a service where consumers can send proof of purchase of goods that will be used by advertisers to stop showing ads for those products to said consumer. 🤔
The question is, who will pay for this? 🤷
Food companies wanted deregulation. Now there are dozens of recalls across the country.
Mining companies wanted deregulation. Now the black lung rate is at a 45-year high.
Financial companies wanted deregulation. Now financial losses to fraud are the highest on record.
Noticing a pattern?
I haue read the truest computer of Times, and the best Arithmetician that euer breathed, and he reduceth thy dayes into a short number..

The first published occurrence of the term “computer”.
Just 5 years ago, if you wanted to affect the world you used mathematics and engineering to change things.
Now we are burning the planet to achieve less using simple language.
Why aren't we trying to enhance our ability to apply mathematics and engineering.
Imagine starting a programming class with the following joke:
What do you get if you divide Arnold Schwarzenegger by zero?
A null terminator.
And everybody just stares at you? 😳
Spring Modulith gives you clean domain boundaries and event-driven decoupling without microservice network latency or ops overhead. You get strict architecture inside a single app, letting you move fast now and split into microservices later only if real scaling demands it.
Science gives us tools whereby we may understand the cosmos: the violent formation of stars, the chaotic movement of air over a wing, the action and the structure of proteins in a cell.
Intellectualism has been well and truly buried at this point. The average person doesn't want the truth, they just want to be told something that fits their confirmation bias in an authoritative voice.
LLM chatbots are the perfect psychopathic populists in that regard.
I visited Santa Clara Square today to check out the scenery & keep an eye on Apple's stupid skunkworks fab. It was a beautiful day but the creek was still a green mess. They were also doing some sort of construction. Anyone know what's going on around San Tomas/Saratoga Creek at Scott Blvd?
I think power itself make them worse decision makers.
