Thank you @mustelina.bsky.social for helping us with biographical info of singers for our VA Folklore Society field recording project! There are 2 recordings of African American singers from Charlottesville, including a solo performance of "The Gospel Train" by Rev Carter Wicks, 1935. Link below.

Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem is playing in the background while I clean, and after all these years, it's still his best film by an interstellar margin. I get that it was a nightmare to make, but I really wish someone would sit him down and explain to him that it actually worked.

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

gadgetreview.comOne of America’s Last Chestnut Groves Is About to Be Destroyed for a Data CenterA rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

Wish I could have been in two places at once for this.

Going to post this a few more times to catch the varied flow of this place. If you've ever like Grand Banks you will likely like this. Probably one of our best sets, certainly one of our more layered/interesting ones (though still our typical move of playing an uninterrupted 30 minutes +/- of music)

Trump: "With the war, it's just artificial. It's a little bit high. It's a small price to pay ... let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay."

It's spooky season, which means it's Horror Movie Recommendations season! Tell me a film or two you like, the basic gist of what you are and are not looking for and I'll try and give you a recommendation before pumpkin night.

Really cool art show with a little music coming up on Friday, Oct. 2 at Infinite Repeats in Charlottesville. The show will feature graphic works (fliers, handbills, calendars ...) for shows at Tokyo Rose over the course of its existence, as well as photos and ephemera! This is going to be very cool!

It's weird seeing my feed blow up over how unexpected it is that Robert Eggers is planning a Shakespeare adaptation for his sixth film, considering his fourth film was *checks notes* Hamlet. (Yes, I know it's an adaptation of the Saxo Grammaticus which was the inspiration for Hamlet, but still!)

Also, his Romeo and Juliet is apparently gonna be in Old English? Any fellow students of Clare Kinney's just felt a disturbance in the force? Seriously though, the prospect of a Robert Eggers Queen Mab scene alone will be worth the price of admission.

I've never looked into this song's origin but seeing the chorus written out I just realized The Moody Blues connection for the first time. Damn.

Nights that won't happen Time we won't spend Nights that won't happen Never ever again Nights that won’t happen Never reaching the end Nights that won’t happen Never even begin Never even begin

The thing about The Disintegration Loops I-IV I too often hear people get wrong is that it is not an album about 9/11. The project was completed the morning of then dedicated to the victims. There are symbolic parallels to be made, "things fall apart" and all, but they were not composed in response.

Meanwhile Basinski's work has left no mark on the geopolitical landscape, no existential crisis of perceived national reality, but the album hasn't killed anyone either. It's a contained and unassuming (if cavernous) work of softer alchemy -- a somber seashell resonance for Le Guin's carrier bag.

One doesn't listen to it so much in memory of what happened on that day as in contrast to it. Stockhausen infamously referred to the attacks as "a work of art" (later clarifying that he meant by Lucifer... eh). It was a nonconsensual and tangibly consequential "work" of widespread chaos, and death.

It birthed the decade that followed, violent and frenzied. It reverberates through the world we find ourselves in. Chaos is the creative, generative counterpart to entropy, a stirring up of life before settling still, but all that has been created from that particular "work of art" is suffering.

The power of the work is heightened by the timing, certainly, but its core feat remains that of paradoxically creating with entropy. It finds beauty in letting cycled phrases die, and wonder in documenting their dying. (Imagine performing a remix 4'33'' by burning the sheetmusic into a microphone.)

The trailer for Mike Flanagan's Carrie miniseries looks great and I fully plan to watch it and expect I'll like it. Dude's earned my faith. It's just really annoying that we've had two film adaptations (plus a sequel) and a TV movie already, and all of them have depicted Carrie as notably slender.

Still, reexamining this aspect of her bullying strikes me as the most logical reason to adapt the story again after the 1976 classic. (Well, other than the original ending where Carrie's revenge massacre was more tragic accident than De Palma's full on rampage.) Yet every version shies away from it!

I'm sure Summer Howell will do a good job. (Loved her in the Chucky films!) I can't stress enough I'm not upset at HER for being slender. I just find it weird that we keep trying to retell this story without seeming to reread the text. It's like if in every remake of Dracula he dressed like Lugosi.

A big part of the novel is that Carrie was bullied by athletes for her weight as much as her awkwardness and strict (abusive) religious homelife. Fat shaming may not be the central theme, but it's almost as tied to the symbolism of the pig's blood prank as her menstruation.

Outside of creeps wanting to sexualize a 16-year-old girl in a shower (which the 2002 version is probably the most guilty of), I do have some sympathy for the fat hesitance. For a book written 20 years after Lord of the Flies, King's descriptions of her body often aren't much better than Golding's.

Not gonna lie, as someone who helps with expanding a library's comic/graphic novel collection, it's been fun showing this to colleagues and being like, "I used to buy Elvis Costello CDs from that guy!"

Hey! It's me, talking about Spider-Man (and more specifically, my Spider-Man book)!

Probably the first hip-hop album I ever owned -- not counting trip-hop. Funny enough, I didn't realize it at the time but I'm pretty sure it was Asheru who gave me a Massive Attack poster when I was 13 and visited to the Music Resource Center.

This post is unavailable.

It might have been a little later though. I was there for a music class Ben Jacobs taught, which would have been after he graduated presumably. (He was a senior when I was whatever LEC's equivalent of 9th grade was.)

Ordered tickets to Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and the site asked to save to my calendar. Being very tired, I hit yes, saving it to the big family calendar. I guess I'll have to explain to my mom and sister that being busy late Friday with "Teenage Sex..." is not what it sounds like! 🤦🏻

They are replacing the pneumatics and maybe part of the frame of the office door next to my cubicle. Lot of smaking things and impact drills into sheetrock and alloys. Years of noise music have conditioned me well for days like today.
