The news from Brazil and Serbia are great and show that you don't defeat the far right by copying it or trying to appeal to their supporters You do it by being uncompromising, showing the danger they pose and offering something different to the many crises people suffer from

The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I just realized I have more street cred than Yglesias. 🫠

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Maybe it makes me a credentialist, but I hate how we constantly elevate guys like Yglesias — who have no relevant education or work experience. In politics, he's never run for office, worked on a campaign or served as an appointee. On policy, he has a BA and has never worked in government.

I've been glad to see therapy and medication for mental health become less stigmatized over time. I would not be able, let alone functional, without medical treatment for chronic depression. The lows were *really really* low without treatment. I'm glad it's okay to accept long-term medical treatment

Fun fact about Nebraska is that it's got the largest concentration of Czechs in the US. The Czech president visited NE in September! Wilber, NE hosts Miss Czech-Slovak each year. UNL has a huge Czech cultural archive.

Micah@rincewind.run

literally this comic except he apparently lives in Czechia instead of Nebraska

Doing my part for this well-deserved 20:1 ratio of quotes to likes (425:20 at time of skeet). What a fantastically factually wrong take (from someone who works for Bloomberg). Ugh.

Martin Luther King was much more successful than Malcolm X for example. Before that, there was no need for a bloody civil war in most countries that abolished slavery. Just votes. Independence can also be bloodless. Gandhi in India, Walesa in Poland, Mandela in South Africa. The list is long.

💥 Some personal news 💥 Visual Algebra is finally DONE! I just sent off an 820-page pdf to the editor. Almost exactly 7 years after I started. The zip file that contains the 100+ plain text LaTeX files and nothing else is a whopping 5.4 MB. Now onward to Volume 2! #MathSky

Oof, spending the summer on the [adjectives] semigroups my late coauthor was into has finally started to pay off, but it's taken months of confusion to finally consider one of his intuitions driving part of our joint work was wrong. He's not allowed to be wrong! I can't argue with him anymore!

So I keep thinking about this. If the tensor algebra (skew commutative!) is a quotient of the exterior algebra where d^2=0, could a malassociative algebra come from a quotient where d(d^2)=0 or something like that? d(d^2)+d^2(d) = 0?

For various weird and "online too much today" reasons I was wondering about objects with a binary operation that is skew-associative (assuming there is an addition with identity and inverses): (a*b)*c = -(a*(b*c)) How bad is this? Like, is it so bad it's impossible?

Considering doing a round of "Civics 101 for US Mathematicians" LinkedIn Learning videos or something. Like, what is The Federal Register and how do you use it; USASpending in a nutshell, etc. What aspect of the federal government do you want explained by a mathematician for you, a mathematician?

One thing I would like to learn how to do on a long list that includes playing bass and drawing real comics is make a first-person shooter style game, but obviously (if you know me) without guns. I don't want my idea out there too much, but rest assured it's cute, absurd, and you'd not be surprised

I've read and cited Carolyn Marvin's book "when old technologies were new" many times. Good to know what historians of technology get up to once they retire. Love it!

I think the last time math functioned like this for me in a sustained way was during my divorce in grad school. So kinda weird blend of feelings going on now, very 2009-2010 vintage. Going to look at old Instagram filters and find my depressing playlists/mix CDs.
