32 years ago today, we held the launch party for DOOM II at the Limelight in NYC, a former church. Happy birthday to DOOM II, but also, happy birthday to the Super Shotgun, the be-all and end-all of many a monster.

Porting TinyGL from C to Luau. What does this mean? Completely custom software rendering in realtime on Roblox. Whilst not shown in this example, I have been able to render 640x480 at ~73FPS on a single thread, even before doing any major optimisations to the project. I'm very very excited :)

What makes this different from Penumbra? Penumbra is a multi-threaded fragment shader pipeline in Luau. It has similar goals, but it can't render out geometry in this fashion. TinyGL implements the main calls of the OpenGL 1.1 spec, and is intended to be run on embedded systems or games.

We can argue that Roblox is one of these, as all we have access to is the Luau environment. No direct GPU access! Software rendering isn't the usual go-to... It's a lot more limited than using a GPU. But the freedom it offers in being able to control the entire stack really is something else.

fingers crossed things start looking up for me from today! I’ve been hoping for some change for a good while now. And I hope that I’ll be able to actualise it.

GTA VI putting a DL code in physical boxes is disappointing, but not surprising. Rockstar are very much anti-not-money, and you only need to look as far as them being anti-union, their shark cards, and legal going after the modding scene. Steam will probs be skipped in favor of their own launcher.

Used market goes bye-bye. Physical game stores are in for a hell of a ride over the next 5 years, because once the example’s set, other publishers will follow.

tl;dr is that Roblox has done too good of a job separating platform liability from experience liability when it comes to how UGC is presented in a game. We think we may have a way but there’s a few big if’s that we’re deliberating on.

I like low maintenance, and if we’re able to make use of Roblox’s automated asset moderation for the sake of the games health, then that’s a win for us.

Somehow things are okay again (WRT FE2CM...?) I've been overly cautious with pulling some features from the game so that we don't find ourselves back at square 1. It's probably gonna upset/piss some people off, but at this point I just want the surface for moderation to be reduced as much as pos.

No response from Roblox’s recommended path for restoring games (Customer support). I have escalated to developer relations with the given support ticket number to make progress on this. FE:C will be the first one (least risky) then I will be pushing for FE2CM.

Looking into best course of action for FE1 and FE2CM being taken down today

Thanks for the support with regards to Roblox causing issues for FE:C/FE2CM. In the grand scheme of things, it’s just another moderation mess up on Roblox’s part in that they also fail to tell me what’s wrong, but I would like my life to not face this issue.

This fear of my work and my joy in it being lost is the best I can say for why I feel like I initially stepped back from FE2 development. I simply can’t see a future I’m happy with where my liberties of thriving as a creative get stripped away with the requirements of being an engineer/maintainer.

The common theme here is that I had no looming fear that this work was going to be unusable in a few years, or that something was going to break. In the gamejam, I had none of that. In Roblox, I’m conditioned to worry about if any new thing I’m working on will require maintenance down the line.

Entropy is everywhere. That can’t be avoided. But the unpredictability and frequency of breakages occuring is simply too much for me to feel good about. I genuinely feel that I’d be healthier mentally if I published on Steam, even if I didn’t meet the level of success that Roblox had given me.

Nearly 10 years ago I began work on something that changed everything for me. I’m forever grateful for that, but the enthusiasm has waned over the past few years and I’ve been struggling to articulate why.

Over the weekend me and my friends worked on a gamejam, and it was the most fun I felt in a long time when it came to making games. I also felt this joy when revisiting making music for FE2 with Despotic Ruins.

Really excited for the AV2 codec ~30% more quality for the same file size? Sure, sign me up. My only concern is how many years out consumer hardware decoding will take. Hopefully less than 3 years from release, accounting for chip design -> manufacture. Apple might be first; then Nvidia…

Anyone got any recommendations for quick mobile games that I can just pull out and play with l, preferably pre-enshittification era? I just played Super Hexagen and did Hyper Hexagonest, so maybe folks could point me in the right direction. I don’t mind paying a small fee for the app.
