I left the intro out, didn’t I. Well, here goes. I’m a nearly 40 year old woman with #ADHD and #depression. I am probably best known for salty fandom commentary, running @geekcalligraphy.bsky.social with my best friend, knitting in public, and acerbic commentary on Jews and comics.

So apparently I’m in a starter pack? Neat! So for the new folks who only found me here and for everyone who came from Ye Olde Birde Site, an intro and some ground rules. Rule 1 - this is my living room. That means my word is law and I will brook no disrespect here.

Conversations with bestie: Me: “Ugh, why is it too much to ask for the dishwasher to DO ITS DAMN JOB” Bestie: “Sounds like the mediocre white man of dishwashers” M: “It really fucking is” B: “Does no work, still expects the title and takes up space”

M: “And the problem is that to stay on top of the dishes I either need a dishwasher that does, or a sink large enough to wash things in by hand. Guess what I have? If you guessed neither, you get a lifetime supply of turtle wax!” B: “[neither.gif]”

Tabitha is best at ensuring no humans leave the premises.

Today's Team Pet is Tabith, who supervises the work of @crewgrrl.bsky.social Tabith is in charge of not letting you leave, ever. Tabitha is recruiting. #Aussiecon5

Me: pulls down visor in the car because the sun is obviously shining directly into my eyeballs. Me: “Oh, it’s just bright out.” Husband Shaped Creature: “yep.” Me: “I don’t like it, I am a grey adapted creature.”

I have now spent ten hours traveling. The initial delay was no one’s fault, but everything that happened after we landed in ORD can be laid at @americanair.bsky.social’s feet. We sat on the tarmac for two hours due to lack of gate, and then nearly an hour for luggage.

Thanks also to all my friends, clients, and the members of PFER who encouraged me to go for this.
Lastly, thank you to my daughter Monster for putting up with sentences like “just one more row” and “not now, I’m counting,”

and my Husband Shaped Creature for dealing with yarn in strange places, parenting our child while I treat conventions like a job, and altogether being the best partner I never could have asked for. I love the both of you to pieces.

Next I need to thank my mom, who suggested that I take up knitting as a more socially acceptable public fidget. Without that, I wouldn’t be up here accepting this rocket. Also, thank you to my dad who supported my love of science fiction in my teen years. This award is definitely partially his.

Thank you to my best friend and business partner, Ariela Housman. @geekcalligraphy.com got us both to this point, and the next rocket is yours. Your support has meant everything to me and I wouldn’t be standing here without you. Love you babe.

First I need to thank everyone who nominated and voted for me. Y’all proved that I could get to this stage on my own account (& with such amazing fellow nominees!) and I will be forever grateful for that.

I will also be at the @brisbane28.org bid party tonight! Anaheim Hilton, 5-110. The party runs from 8 pm to midnight, I’ll be in and out. Come try my ANZAC biscuits! Hoping to see folks here, there and everywhere!

I am baking SO many biscuits. There are 54 in the tin, 60 in the oven, and many more trays to go.

More office conversations at @geekcalligraphy.com: Ariela: “I am bringing the mats and the cats.” Ariela: “there’s a parody children’s book in there somewhere.” Me: “sounds like one of the Hooked on Phonics practice books.”

The ratification passed by ONE vote. State Senator Harry Burn credited a letter from his mother as the thing that changed his vote from no to yes. "I knew that a mother's advice is always safest to follow and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification."

JSTOR@jstor.bsky.social

#OnThisDay in 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, securing the number of states needed to add it to the US Constitution. The struggle for voting rights was far from over, as restrictions continued to disenfranchise Black women & other women of color for decades.

That letter included sentences like: "Hurrah and vote for suffrage and don’t keep them in doubt" and "Don’t forget to be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt." The musical Suffs gave her an entire song, and changed the letter to a telegram, but this happened. History is bonkers sometimes.

There are now several not quite 8x10 pieces of black mat board labeled “catboard.” We will be using them to mat the individual elements of the Clowder of Stars, which is gonna be SO COOL when it’s done.

This is a perennial reminder, as @brisbane28.org prepares to answer Q&A at @laworldcon.bsky.social. We can’t predict every new disaster that will befall fandom in the next two years. We can write a comprehensive code of conduct and expect attendees to follow it.

T Ash@crewgrrl.bsky.social

Grumble grumble the problem with Worldcon is that each convention is entirely unique, there is no functional continuity, every mistake is actually happening in its own silo, grumble grumble

We can learn from the pitfalls that happened to LA, Seattle, Glasgow, etc. We are prepared to answer questions about things that have already occurred, and what we intend to do differently. We cannot possibly answer questions about shit that goes down AT @laworldcon.bsky.social.

Our crystal balls are all broken, the tea leaves sit in forlorn clumps at the bottom of the cups, the magic eight balls are all simultaneously displaying “ask again later,” and the paper fortune tellers have all spontaneously combusted. We’re all doing our best in an ever changing world.

I’d show my earring storage, but the necklaces are currently also draped every which way on them and their storage won’t get here until Sunday. But my jewelry is starting to look like a proper collection and not a jumble sale.

Tonight I am sleeping in my own bed for the first time in almost a month. I missed it so very much. The house is still a maze of twisty passages all of boxes, but MY BED is in my bedroom.

Husband Shaped Creature: “we have too much stuff.” Me: “look at this. Can we throw it out?” HSC: “it might be useful.” Um. Maybe that’s part of why we have too much stuff?

We are stuck in London for two extra days due to flight cancellation. This is a bit harder for us due to Shabbat being involved, but we’ve made that work. Part of making it work involved double checking with the hotel if they’d store/warm up food for us and explaining why.

They knocked on the door about two hours ago with a loaf of challah, a fancy fruit plate, some electric candles (I have tea lights on hand, but they’ve asked us not to light them), and a card wishing us a meaningful, peaceful, and joyous Shabbat.
