Since the institution of this rule last week, 24 posts have been made with the "AI Assisted" flair, and the number of posts with the "100% Human Coded" flair (which replaced 'biologically coded' after feedback from the community) is... one. Which is basically what I'd expect.

“Biologically coded” Bruh

There were a lot of posts in the community talking about how excited people were to be able to filter out the "AI stuff", and see only the hand-coded projects. And it turns out that there just aren't many of those in a community focused on spare time, niche, hobbyist software development.

Making developers build a bridge in exchange for getting permission to build more apartments has been a written-in-zoning code element of Cambridge's zoning for 20 years. The bridge, and the corresponding developed space, has not yet been built. None of this is a joke.

Subsidized housing is a good thing and we should publicly fund it instead of relying on kludgy, counterproductive market mechanisms that trade broad middle class housing affordability for a handful of means-tested units.

this evening, i was riding down mossland, and some lady was screaming at the car next to her about how ridiculous the neighborway reconfiguration is, how these cyclists don't even pay taxes and think they own the road. I rode up and asked her which taxes I don't pay ("excise tax", which I do).

She then asked me if I have liability insurance for my bike (Yes, both through my car insurance and specific bike insurance). "I don't believe you", she said, then illegally turned right on red and drove off.

I will actively avoid travelling on roads in Cambridge/Somerville between 5pm and 5:30pm if I can avoid it. 5:45pm drivers are *so much more reasonable* that it's wild.

don't worry, this is the airport experience in most states, not just red ones.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

It’s always cool when you visit a new city and their transit service totally fails you just landed in New Orleans and the airport express bus was supposed to arrive 15 minutes ago and there’s a dozen people waiting, but the app that lets you track your bus is down red state governance, folks!

Hey Somerville... Guess what?  WE BOUGHT THE BUILDING. The Somerville Theatre now belongs to the people who run it. Buying it was our leap of faith. Supporting it is where you come in. Find how you can help: somervilletheatre.com/future

i think it's less "people were mean to them on social", and more "their stock price plummeted by 35%", which is the kind of thing you don't want to have happen over something that makes up a very tiny portion of your business.

Phillip Carter@phillipcarter.dev

I am sorry but this is the funniest outcome. They ragequit the CA business because people were mean to them on social media loooooool emudhra.com/en/press-rel...

like, yes, they say "social media amplification", but what they mean is "until now, nobody but our customers had heard of us; forever going forward, the thing most people will know about us is this thing that we sucked at". Seems wise to walk away!

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

in attempting to clean up my website, Claude thinks that it has probably been exploited on at least 4 separate occasions. While several of them are through wordpress, at least one of them probably wasn't. All likely stemmed from inappropriately allowing the webserver write access to the webroot.

Christopher Schmidt@crschmidt.net

(this is sort of a joke--obviously i should care about the security of my server in light of new vulnerabilities--but also not a joke: I genuinely do have antique, untouched wordpress installs on the machine that someone has already used to get remote access and install a backdoor)

Anyway, I have now transitioned my website to: - Not using PHP for anything (all static content) other than the blog content. - The blog is now on a modern Wordpress version, and has automatic updates set up. So my host is no longer going to be a source of spam/remote attacks on others.

I've known I should do this for a long time, but the thing that actually made it so I could do this was Claude walking me through a bunch of step by step work to transition at least somewhat cleanly. My website is still a mess, but at least it's no longer a mess that is actively hurting the web.

many people warned me that i should be very concerned about the PHP running on my server today. little did they know that I've been running an unpatched wordpress install on php 5 that I haven't touched since at least 2018, so I already have at least one remote access shell running on the machine.

This is not even slightly true! Texas has "cities" that are large collections of suburbs and a density profile where it's densest cities are lower density than the typical California suburb

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

Californians pretend they live in the city and Texans pretend they live in the country, the suburbs where people in both states actually live are largely identical

oof.

We have 354 people signed up for public comment at tonight's #cambma City Council meeting. If everybody showed up, that would be SIX HOURS of public comment at 60 seconds each.

Party time; excellent.

Aurora, an outer-ring suburb of Chicago, turned an ordinary downtown street into a protected bike connection to the Fox River Trail. It didn't require Copenhagen-style streets. Just a decision to make better use of the street space they already have!

I am very psyched for this change. Avoiding the Porter square shopping center parking lot on my reverse commute will be better for everyone. Also, I am excited to see exactly how long it will take drivers to mow down the mossland flexpost diverters.

New traffic pattern alert - Starting on Thursday, October 15, Mossland Street will be closed to motor vehicles at its intersection with Elm Street. Mossland Street will become a two-way dead-end street with access for residents and visitors via Somerville Avenue.

If you want to read a transcript that references Mrs. Pac-Man, Captain Janeway's preferred form of address, the absolutely atrocious performance of the Red Sox this year, and Waiting for Godot, all while demonstrating (appropriate) utter contempt for the Government's behavior, this is a good one.

Kathryn Tewson@kathryntewson.bsky.social

Actually, I’d recommend this transcript generally. It has some funny moments in it.

That first Brockton file? It's copaganda, plain and simple. Titled: "May 19, 2026: Air 4 assists in Brockton Patrol." TL;DR: There was a young brown man joyriding on some kind of e-bike, and they brought in a state fucking helicopter to track him down. 4/?

Literally, the reason they glommed onto one guy is because he rolled through a stop sign, at a 4-way stop *with no cars, pedestrians, or other vehicles present*. That's the reason they started following him: for doing something that many bikers would safely do routinely. (He even slowed to check!)

So they spent thousands of dollars on air wing time; involved at least a half dozen different cruisers; drove recklessly on the streets from at least Milton to Brockton for 1hr+, in order to tackle and arrest one guy on a moped, who they initially saw... riding a moped through a park with a friend.

Turns out the friction of having to learn photoshop was a crucial firewall protecting society from the terrible taste of small business owners

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

Lest you think I'm cherrypicking, here's another shot of the terrifying criminal causing havoc and mayhem. And like yeah, he's joyriding, but do you see the terrified onlookers leaping aside? No you do not because they are not there. The crime is driving while black. (do you even see him?) 9/?

we are approaching the point where RAM is worth its weight in gold, which is not usually a standard you want to be approaching.

hrm. a before and after from november 2024 to now

Almost exactly 4 years ago, I purchased a RadMission in their EOL sale of the bike for $500. That sale resulted in me referring more than 180 people to buy a bike from RadPowerBikes in a 3 day window, which eventually resulted in the creation of the E-Bike Lending Library. Today, I sold that bike.

I agree with both the proponents and the opponents in this tweet. The difference is that the opponents see this as bad, while I see it as good. “Local control” to retain racist/classist policy is bad.

WBUR@wbur.org

Ballot Question 7 would allow single-family homes to be built on lots that are at least 5,000 square feet — which is a bit bigger than an NBA basketball court. Proponents say this will help create more affordable housing. Opponents say it takes away local decision-making over land use and zoning.

Being scared to bike is a major cause of people deciding not to make a purchase of an e-bike. Often there's a single spouse who is ready to make the switch, but a second spouse who will push back over fears that it can't be safe. But the progress we've made here *is* moving the needle.

We know this is true in part because in the city, where it is a larger pain in the ass to drive them (simply due to geometry), there are fewer larger vehicles. Making life more painful for larger vehicles is generally good for almost everyone.

i swear to god if kavi had not described this to me in real life I would have assumed this was a bit making fun of how useless the mayor of LA is. Like, YOU CHOSE TO PUBLISH THIS VIDEO! YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT! YOU COULD HAVE COME BACK THE NEXT DAY AND SHOWED THE POTHOLE BEING FILLED IN!!

"Thanks for making a request! I will now show you that we are incompetent to do anything about it. Feel free to report other things to us so we can also do nothing about those!" WHO LET YOU PUBLISH THIS.
