This is what I was trying to explain to my Australian parents. They still don’t understand. Why didn’t David Eby’s party Just Do Something before he plunged the province into a disastrous early election?
Counterpoint: Australia has had more periods of political instability — including prime ministers changing between elections — because the caucus can launch a coup of their own leader pretty easily.
Very interesting timing for this thread as I watched the stupidity of the BC Election from Australia.
Let me tell you a story about the politics of Australia: Over the last 28 years generally, but over the last decade particularly, I've done a lot of politics outside of Australia. Last week, an organisation I work with called me in for a meeting mostly among people like me around the world /n

So upsetting People voted NDP in 2024 for clear reasons Eby threw it all away intellectualizing and being a very poor politician Now NDP voters have nothing
David Eby’s gamble ended up in a catastrophic defeat for the B.C. NDP 😬 That was the worst political FAFO I have seen in a long time. 🤦🏽♂️ 🔗 Source: www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/bc...

someone sent me a british columbia government simulation game, and i don't know if it's "good" or "accurate" or "objective" but after 20 minutes i know that it's "addictive" and "a problem if i want to do a good job on election night" governbc.ca
This has saddened me so much this week. But the infuriating part is the focus on it being solely a political attack. Yes, Ms Haines is an MP, but more essentially, she is a female MP. And her attacker was a man.
Independent MP Helen Haines remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital, more than two days after she was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Victoria's north-east. Follow updates in our live blog.
Need any more parrot shots @moebiusstripper.bsky.social? I’ve amassed a few but to my eyes, they are all so boring now. Can I interest you in a kookaburra?
Another one of these Victoria (BC)? or Victoria (Australia) moments. This happened to us about a decade ago and it’s true, schools are desperately underfunded but I don’t blame the parents for that. Fund public education via taxation properly. Period. Free should mean free (to user).
A principals' association says Victorian schools will be made worse off by an education department directive to stress that contributions are voluntary in the public system.

Means-testing is the enemy. It's a trick — a sham. It erodes social cohesion. It stigmatizes. We must escape this notion of deserving and undeserving and drawing arbitrary lines that only serve to divide us. Instead, we should provide universally and tax the rich appropriately.
This week's New Statesman column, in which I attempt to annoy everyone by making the left-wing case for people earning over £100k to be entitled to free childcare. If you want a high tax, high spend society, you can't exclude the people who contribute the most www.newstatesman.com/politics/fut...
