Born 1 Oct 1920, actor Walter Matthau. He starred in 10 films alongside his real-life friend Jack Lemmon, including The Odd Couple (1968) & Grumpy Old Men (1993). The New York Times called this 1 of Hollywood's most successful pairings. I always loved him in The Taking of Pelham 123. #WalterMatthau

Written before current heat wave! I should emphasise that, although the Earth would be at -18 degrees C without greenhouse effect of water vapour, and carbon dioxide has dug the planet out of 3 Snowball Earth phases, our greenhouse emmissions are nevertheless making the planet uninhabitable for us.

Globally, millions are on the move - because of climate change, war, poverty etc - and the numbers are mushrooming. Pulling up the drawbridge cannot work. A solution requires rich countries to confront the causes rather than descend into populism. We must find a way to reduce global inequality.

The human brain, with 86 billion neurons and a million billion connections between them, runs on 20 watts, less than a lightbulb. Think we may be going down the wrong road believing data centres, needing megawatts or gigawatts of power, with all the environmental & climate costs, are the way to go.
