Justin Webb is one of a number of presenters - Evan Davis also comes to mind - who use a supercilious, faintly mocking, amused tone which has no place in the transmission of news. It's obviously a characteristic that gets you promoted at the BBC. But it is grating for listeners.

Justin Webb is a regular presenter on #BBC Radio4 #Today programme:

Of all the bbc presenters, Webb’s politics are the easiest to read - because he puts them in newspapers and doesn’t even try to hide them in broadcasts His politics are also mind numbingly predictable

The BBC needs to provide an explanation for this.

The allegations against Donald Trump for sexual assault seem to have a common denominator: He is physically violent and intentionally inflicts pain on his victims. He likes to slam women and girls up against doors and walls as he roughly manhandles them. Donald Trump is a sick and twisted person.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

He took it quite personally and said the Sunday Times wasn’t like that and that he could assure me the proprietor had no influence over what the paper covered. Of course, if he had thought any diferently, he would never have got the job of editor of the Sunday Times.

At the Cheltenham Literature Festival, I asked this question of editor of The Sunday Times: “I’m looking at the government website and I can see the amount of uncollected tax last year was £46.8 billion. Could it be that the media focus on welfare rather than tax avoidance because of their owners?”

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

‼️Putin's ally Vučić conceded defeat after a big election loss in Serbia. The opposition won an outright majority after record voter turnout. Magyar, commenting on the similarity to Hungary's election, offered his support to the incoming Serbian government. Good to see this.

Lula's win means so much, for rights, geopolitics, the Amazon and climate and more. But it also blocks the US from gaining a new partner in its expanding and unchecked war in Latin america where it has been killing people without charge or public evidence.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Historic comeback in Brazil! And perhaps, more importantly, the emergence of a new playbook for beating the far right: Challenge social media algorithms in the courts, reclaim the flag, call out extractivist fascism and fill the streets and the networks.
