Current Anarchy has a nice ring to it...

Harmit Singh Malik@harmitmalik.bsky.social

When I was a student moving from engineering to biology, I often heard that I was moving to a ‘soft science.’ Whereas physics and chemistry and mathematics had ground truth rules that were true no matter what, biology seemed like anarchy by comparison.

1/ Two really fun reviews just landed back to back in Current Biology, both on a question I never get tired of: why did animals take over when they did? One argues animals engineered their own world. The other argues oxygen and temperature had to line up first.

The Gaia hypothesis — the notion by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis that Earth and Life are best understood as one functional unit — has had a checkered history. But it also may have helped midwife Earth System Science. 🌍🌱🦠🛘 Florian Maderspacher on Gaia's many guises👇 www.cell.com/current-biol...

On the topic of Life& Earth: Guess who works tirelessly to keep the precious polymetallic nodules exposed that #deep-sea #mining projects have their eyes on? That's right: Bioturbation by benthic animals! New by Loïc Van Audenhaege & co www.cell.com/current-biol...

cell.comFunctional roles of abyssal benthos in sustaining polymetallic nodule fieldsVan Audenhaege et al. identify abyssal benthic species that actively clear sediment and uplift polymetallic nodules, reworking the entire seabed on yearly to decadal timescales. This process maintains...

Our cover rock shows a record of the earliest oxygenation of Earth. But how did oxygen (an temperature) shape the evolution of marine animal life in the last billion year? Check out the review by Kemi Ashing-Giwa, Erik Sperling and colleagues www.cell.com/current-biol...

cell.comThe evolution of oxygen, temperature, and marine aerobic habitat for animals over the last billion years of Earth historyKemi F. Ashing-Giwa and colleagues explore how oxygen and temperature have interacted over the last billion years to define marine aerobic habitat for animals.

Are migratory birds born with a magnetic map, or do they learn it? In our @currentbiology.bsky.social study, Eurasian reed warblers caught in autumn/tested in spring did not compensate for a virtual displacement of over 1,000 km. Magnetic maps in songbirds may develop through migratory experience.

Our story about short-long cell leaf epidermal patterning is out in @currentbiology.bsky.social now! My highlight is the beautiful imaging and thorough analysis by the incredibly talented @ncyberwitch.bsky.social. Congrats to all involved 🌾 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Our preprint now peer-reviewed and published 🌾🔬🧬 Grasses have a signature short-long leaf epidermal pattern: small stomata & hair cells spaced by long pavement cells, but how is it built? Premitotic BdPL1 sets cell-size asymmetry; postmitotic BdBRX-solo/BdYDA1 enforces fate. doi.org/10.1016/j.cu...

A decade ago, a “weird” kitten was found on a road near a Bolivian forest. Too small to be a housecat, he had a scrunched-up face, short round ears, long whiskers, & a coat of leopard-like spots. DNA analysis now reveals him as the very first of a newly discovered species & I think I'm in love. 😻🧬🧪👇

nationalgeographic.comMeet the First New Cat Species Discovered in 100 YearsA small, spotted tiger cat from Bolivia may just be the beginning of a wave of new small cat species.

The cat shown lives resides at Senda Verde Animal Refuge in Bolivia’s Yungas region. The animal is the only known Tilcayo living in protective captivity. It arrived at the sanctuary ca. 2017 after being turned over by a local family that had kept it in their home.
