Are migratory birds born with a magnetic map, or do they learn it? In our @currentbiology.bsky.social study, Eurasian reed warblers caught in autumn/tested in spring did not compensate for a virtual displacement of over 1,000 km. Magnetic maps in songbirds may develop through migratory experience.

#NavigationNews Another interesting paper on 🧲🧭magnetoreception in migratory frogs

Nikita Chernetsov@ascir.bsky.social

Believe it or not, but here is yet another paper, this time on marsh frogs. Even though behavioural evidence suggests that marsh frogs also have a magnetic compass, electroretinograms recorded from their isolated retinas showed no response to the magnetic field. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

How do migratory butterflies find their way? In our new paper in @royalsocietypublishing.org Journal of the Royal Society Interface, we show that European red admirals use solar cues for orientation, with no clear evidence of a magnetic compass, in contrast to monarch butterflies. 🦋 Read more:

Seasonal migration in animals is a widespread and complex phenomenon, yet the mechanisms underlying orientation and navigation remain poorly unde

Hello visual ecologists! Are you studying how human activities (urbanization, deforestation, climate change, pollution, etc) affect animal coloration? I want to talk to you! 🧪 I've found some interesting reviews & older papers, but I want to find out more about research currently in progress!

Where did bats come from?🦇🌍 After decades of debate, the biggest bat genome + fossil study ever done has an answer - and it’s not where anyone expected! 🤩OUR PHASE 1 FLAGSHIP is out today in nature! doi.org/10.1038/s415... A thread 🧵

A new paper is out! We revisited a 25-year-old hypothesis that magnetic cues trigger increased fuelling in young migratory birds before crossing the Sahara. In thrush nightingales, we found no robust effect, suggesting that this response may be context-dependent rather than universal.
