On October 26, 1996, a brave group of intersex people, backed by transgender allies, demonstrated for the first time against the harms, including nonconsensual surgeries, they’d experienced from doctors. This was declared the first #IntersexAwarenessDay.

"Policies that aim to define or restrict a person’s sex or gender are not rooted in scientific reality; they’re based on political ideology."

On Intersex Awareness Day, Zach Eisenstein explains why political attempts to define sex as strictly male or female ignore scientific reality.

Three years ago, I was checking out the reading clubs in Leuven; turns out there was no sciency one discussing societal topics. So, I started one myself. It grew into a steady community, and now I finally gave it a home online as well feminist-reading-club.com

When Betsy Driver’s mother took her to medical appointments as a child, she asked whether other children were like her daughter. According to Driver, doctors told her no. Years later, Driver found people with the same intersex variation who had been treated at the same hospital. "We were lied to."

The Advocate@advocate.com

On Intersex Awareness Day, Betsy Driver and Riki Wilchins trace a movement that challenged medical secrecy and is still fighting to make consent matter.

I love this. Dissection is such an important part of the curriculum, as we need health providers to understand the amazing variation and history written into the bodies of their patients. Here, the daughter of a donor writes beautifully about her experience of grief and honoring her mother's wishes.

Which sex does most of the hunting differs between chimps and bonobos, who are skeletally similar. Seems like skeletal anatomy cannot predict whether/how sex relates to hunting in our closest living relatives. Remind me why we think we can predict sex based hunting behaviors in fossil hominins?

John Hawks@johnhawks.net

Anthropologists have often assumed hunting was a male activity for hominin relatives. New research adds strong statistical support to the data for female hunting dominance in bonobos. Is this a better model than the male-dominated chimpanzees for ancient hominins? www.johnhawks.net/p/woman-the-...

This story was great for complicating how we use the term "fit" today vs. in the past, and how the term relates to classism, racism, sexism, eugenics, nationalism, fascism, and modern ideas that link physical fitness with morality/personal value. A lot to cover in only 40ish minutes!

I strongly believe humans have the right to not see ads. This shouldn't even be a right we pay more for, it should be the default. We should have the right to not experience propaganda designed to influence our psychology, decision making, and wallets 24/7.

Like think about it: what would you have to do to avoid any sort of advertisement for a 24hr period? Avoid the internet, avoid most/all public transportation, avoid driving anywhere that has a billboard (especially those annoying light up ones), avoid tv, radio, software or apps you've paid for...

I'm not sure I could do this and do my job, so avoiding ads requires a vacation day. Which is absolutely ridiculous. Don't get me started on what kids would have to do and how ads negatively affect them while also being nearly impossible to avoid!

I remember watching Minority Report for the first time and being horrified by the scene with hundreds of unavoidable personalized ads thrown at the main character as he walks through a shopping center. That doesn't seem too far fetched today!

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

My colleague, Heather Garvin, and I both previously conducted research on the sex differences of #HomoNaledi, only for a recent study to show that all of the fossils were female. While we weren't involved with the new study, it has implications for our future research. www.dmu.edu/blog/2026/08...

Today in #WomensHealth: Often, ovarian cancer is actually fallopian tube cancer. Removing the tubes prevents the cancer and can be done with any abdominal surgery (including c-sections). Part of why we're bad at finding ovarian cancer early enough to treat is that we're looking in the wrong organ!

nytimes.comThere’s a Way to Prevent Ovarian Cancer. Few Know About It. (Gift Article)The vast majority of cases begin in the fallopian tubes — and removing them can reduce the risk by nearly 80 percent.

Preview: All the #Homonaledi (with teeth) are female. I study the #evolution of sex differences in the #hominin skeleton, particularly in the pelvis, and literally wrote the paper on the naledi pelvis. So why didn't I figure out that the entire sample from this cave was female?

Preservation! The image shows the best pelvic fragments from #Homonaledi. They represent multiple individuals, including kids and adults, but are so broken it's difficult to tell which are which. Unable to distinguish age and sex differences, we couldn't say much about sex!

I still ask strangers for help. 2004: Got lost in Kyoto with a paper map. A shop clerk who didn't speak English helped me find a stranger who did to get directions. 2024: Got lost in Addis Ababa with a phone. A local student helped me find my hotel. 100% recommend talking to strangers when lost!

I did once miss my exit driving to an airport because I forgot which exit my paper map said to take. I ended up pulling over many miles later to call my mom, who looked up directions for me on Mapquest so I could get back on track. It was a different time!

If you ever wonder if you work in a low-diversity field, Google Image search your job title. Of the first 33 images returned for "paleoanthropologist", 2 are women, 3 are non-white, and 7 are Lee Berger (not surprising given his commitment to outreach). #Paleoanthropology we can surely do better!

This is particularly concerning. For an academic to deliver a keynote presentation and be unable to answer questions because he's not actually familiar with the works he just discussed (recited?) – wow, just wow at how bad this is.

.. and impose ever-increasing mechanisms of social control. He didn't answer that question. In fact, he was not able to answer most questions colleagues asked in the Q&A. Someone asked him about Heidegger since he talked at length about phenomenology. He had no response. Did he need to ask Claude?

Wild story. I'm curious if he was paid to be the keynote speaker and if the organizers knew he wouldn't be presenting his own work?

I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +

Part of my job involves writing fair exam questions for medical students. I've completed multiple courses/workshops to make sure I'm effective at this aspect of my job. So it really annoys me when I take quizzes for required employee trainings that were written by people who lack this skill set.

A good quiz question will test only one of the module's learning objectives. Readers should be able to think of the answer before reading the options to confirm their understanding of the concept being tested. Thus, "Which of the following is not true of x?" is a poor question format!

NEW: Trump's gross Aliens.gov site claims to map where immigrants have been taken into custody, but it includes more 83 spots where Americans alone were arrested. Over 700 locations include citizen arrests. The counter is fake. The music was ripped. And Puerto Rico is listed as a foreign country.

The first cat to be cloned was a calico female named Rainbow (left). The clone, produced at Texas A&M University in 2001 was named "CC" for Carbon Copy or CopyCat (right). Notice something odd about the "identical copy"? Not very identical is she? But they *are confirmed* genetically identical.

Surprised to learn scientists can't agree on a definition of sex? Don't be! To be honest, we can't even agree on a definition of species. Many so-called natural categories are hard to define once we look at the evidence. Biology is too complex for simple definitions, which is a feature, not a bug.
