Microsoft losing the plot to the extent that games running on Linux through a compatibility layer are now not only faster but *assumed to be faster* than games running natively on Windows should be an even bigger story than it already is

I'm quite shocked to see a user-space Rust scheduler (rustland) competing and, in some cases, even outperforming other BPF or in-kernel schedulers. Big shoutout to the @cachyos.org community for constantly running all these benchmarks! It's great motivation to keep improving!

After long 3 months of work, I'm glad to release niri v25.05 with the Overview, screenshot UI tablet and touch support, dynamic screencast target, and lots of other things! Release notes prepared for your reading pleasure as always: github.com/YaLTeR/niri/... #niri #smithay #rust #wayland

Just came across Sandbox, a Rust-based tool which uses OverlayFS for creating lightweight containerized views of the host OS for safely running semi-trusted programs. Could be interesting way to modify and even install system apps on immutable #Linux distros, or test OS upgrades on regular distros.

Proton-GE's first v10 release is out! This is also the first version to include experimental Wayland support––something which Valve's Proton currently lacks! You can enable Wayland support by setting "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1" in the launch options. #gamingonlinux #linux #linuxgaming

For digital artists wanting to switch to Linux and don't think Krita is a capable tool, check out David's work! There's really no need for proprietary apps like ClipStudioPaint, SAI2 etc. It's time to free yourself from corporate control and enter a brave new world where YOU are in full control.

I've decided to revamp my Linux kernel scheduler in Rust, re-designing and improving the BPF <-> user-space pipeline, and found some interesting benchmark results (from the Phoronix test suite). User-space scheduling feels even more viable now. More info: arighi.blogspot.com/2025/05/reva...

i miss the early internet. people were like “you gotta see this dude. this cat sure is long.” and they were right. it was really long. it never shoulda gotten any more complicated than that.

This made me remember 3DNA, a shell replacement for Windows 9x/XP, which arranged all your apps and shortcuts inside a 3D game-like interface. www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-0W...

I randomly remembered Madotate. A program that adds a 4th button to window title bars, allowing you to fold them to the edges of the screen with a neat 3D animation. I've no idea where I found out about it, and it was clunky and kinda pointless, but the cool factor was amazing.

I also recommend avoiding ALL Chromium/Blink based browsers, as it furthers the Chromium monopoly, hurting smaller browsers and web diversity (Cloudflare blocking browsers they don't recognise). Fight the monopoly. Use LibreWolf or Zen instead. Support upcoming indie browsers like Ladybird & Servo.

Why I recommend against Brave buff.ly/DhdOySt <- this is serious. Said it before, I will say it again. Do not use the Brave browser. It is a corrupt product which is insecure, repeatedly steals from others, founded and run by an immoral and unethical bigot. DO NOT USE BRAVE.

Bluesky on the Ladybird web browser is getting very close to a usable state! It is now possible to submit new posts and replies successfully (albeit, painfully). This message was posted from Ladybird btw. #foss #floss #opensource #linux

Posting this from Ladybird on Arch Linux!

Be warned however, that it is still very buggy, still very pre-alpha. Impressive progress nonetheless, considering that I couldn't even get to this stage (posting on Bsky) a month ago.

Zypper's slowness is one of the reasons why I left openSUSE many moons ago. Glad to see this is finally being addressed!

My first exposure to Darude: Sandstorm was in Norton Utilities 2001. Yes, you read that right: Norton freakin Utilities. Back in the day, when commercial software was still cool, programmers used to include secret "easter eggs" that did cool/unexpected stuff like youtu.be/wrjKRSZ3E4c

My first (and for a while only) exposure to Darude: Sandstorm was at Six Flags Great America where during Fright Fest they would take the enclosed teacup ride, black it out, fill it with fog and lights and stuff, then blast the music as you spun yourself to death and it was beautiful.

On a side note, I find it pretty cool that you can run a 25-year old Windows exe without issues on Linux. Meanwhile, trying to run a 25-year old Linux binary on Linux - especially if it's a GUI app - would be next to impossible. I guess this is why they say "Win32 is the only stable ABI on Linux" 🙃
