My colleague @socialinfluenza.bsky.social has written an absolutely excellent explainer for @theconversation.com about our recent paper with @dalan-bailey.bsky.social identifying a new human surface receptor for alphacoronaviruses: theconversation.com/scientists-h...

A study in Nature finds that a subset of bat alphacoronaviruses (a major group of coronaviruses) has the potential to enter human cells by exploiting a previously unknown cellular gateway. 🧪

go.nature.comHeart-nosed bat alphacoronaviruses use human CEACAM6 to enter cells - NatureHuman CEACAM6, which is widely expressed in the lung, is identified as a receptor used by the spike proteins of Cardioderma cor (heart-nosed bat) alphacoronaviruses to enter cells.
