Why did OpenTelemetry win? I think just saying "vendor neutral" is not giving enough credit to the symbiosis between OTel and Platform Engineering that's making both thrive in the modern cloud native industry. Cloud, containers, OTel, AI... They all share one thing. newrelic.com/blog/observa...

newrelic.comHow Standards Get Adopted: OTel and Platform EngineeringOpenTelemetry didn't win on vendor neutrality alone — it won by changing how platform teams and developers work together. Here's how.

At (almost) 40 I just discovered that I have a pretty high degree of aphantasia, and that the normal thing when someone says "picture this" is to actually be able to picture objects in your mind?? What??

I don't think this has had any negative consequences during my whole life, but I can certainly understand better why I'm so bad at interior design!

If you say "picture a red apple" I can sort of visualise the concept, weirdly I get flashes of closeups of the fruit flesh, or the green stripes over a red surface... maybe the general idea of the contour, but a full image that stays clear and does not dissolve? Nope! Now I feel I'm missing out!

Great article by @cijothomas.bsky.social. Thanks for sharing! In my career I've had to have this argument many times, with many teams. So, from experience, I also ask you not to wrap #OTel APIs (unless you really really need it)

OpenTelemetry@opentelemetry.io

That well-meaning TelemetryHelper wrapper over #OpenTelemetry? It probably hurts more than helps: kills zero-alloc paths, adds lookups to your hot path, and your team learns the wrapper instead of #OTel. Skip the wrapper. 👇 buff.ly/snwRG0A

Sometimes, when I've had a bad day, I like reminding myself to "not be too harsh and the pursuit of perfection". Some wisdom from a vinyl installation tutorial I got for an old laptop, that lives permanently on my fridge door now.

Hey, no offence to the folks at #KubeCon that were wearing all the badges from past editions on their lanyard. It's fucking effort and one should be proud. But, I've rewatched Office Space not long ago and the only thing I could think was "we need to talk about your flair"

Don't take it from mainstream news or any government official, this is a short and clear explanation of the legal situation regarding @freedomflotilla.bsky.social by a Professor of International Law at the Australian National University.

theconversation.comIsrael’s interception of the Gaza aid flotilla is a clear violation of international lawFlotilla organisers say the Israeli military boarded their ships in international waters, where they have the right to freedom of navigation.

We all talk about high-quality telemetry, AI-assisted RCA, advanced tooling... but honestly, it's all meaningless without the foundational basis of system (and subsystem) boundaries, ownership, and responsibility.

All software systems used or operated (in any form) by a group of humans are socio-technical in nature. If the "socio" part breaks down, or it's not even discussed, the technical part won't help you. This is why concepts like SLOs and scorecards are harder to roll out effectively than they may seem.
