Incredibly close to the UK October MSLP record with 948.1 hPa at Stornoway at 22Z Saturday, but just slightly north of the centre of #Boelo. It's likely a lower MSLP value would have been recorded had there been an observation station farther south on Harris. bsky.app/profile/danh...

As Storm #Boelo tracks across/close to N/NW Scotland on Saturday night, its central pressure is likely to be 946-949 hPa. The current UK October low MSLP record is 947.9 hPa (Storm Amy 2025). There's a chance we could beat this... just one week after near-record high MSLP! bsky.app/profile/danh...

1040.4 hPa at Tulloch Bridge on Saturday morning makes this the strongest high pressure over the UK in October since 2018 โ€” and in Scotland since 2016. Several sites with ~30 years data have set new October MSLP records in S'ern Scotland, N'ern England & Northern Ireland. @alexdeakin.bsky.social

Analysed as 931 hPa on 12Z ASXX, with a fall in central pressure of 49 hPa in 24 hours, this exceptionally deep low near Iceland more than satisfies explosive cyclogenesis ๐ŸŒ€ Potentially a record deep low for October in Iceland with 935 hPa observed on land... ๐Ÿ“‰ bsky.app/profile/meto...

A rapidly deepening area of low pressure has undergone explosive cyclogenesis today ๐ŸŒ€ This is pulling warmer air northwards, but also bringing stormy conditions across the far northwest ๐Ÿ‘‡

It was an exceptionally warm night across the UK for late September, with some stations recording 22ยฐC during the early hours. The temperature has been rising all through the night at Edinburgh, for example. Red box highlights just how much last night stands out from individual site records.

A short video, panning from SW to NE, of totality from the 8th April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, taken at ~2pm local time in rural Illinois. Such a surreal experience, especially the shadow bands immediately before totality.

Four minutes of totality featuring a 3ยฐC drop in temperature, winds falling light and a glimpse of solar prominence and the Sun's corona... ๐ŸŒ‘โ˜€๏ธ We shared the experience with a local farmer, Steve, who was more excited that a small group of Brits had turned up in his hamlet than the actual eclipse!

Experimenting with ways to convey extremeness of a month/season as a combination of temperature, rainfall and sunshine. Eventually settled on these "Climate Segments", which really highlight how exceptional July 2026 was in England/Wales. More details in the Deep Dive: youtube.com/watch?v=m-om...

Here's a look at numerous individual weather stations across a swathe of England + Wales, comparing the maximum temperature recorded during June 2026 with the whole of summer 1976 โ€“ in some cases temperatures were over 4ยฐC hotter in the recent heatwave ๐ŸŒก๏ธ bsky.app/profile/meto...

As further data from our observation network has been made available over the weekend, the provisional new UK highest June temperature on record is 37.7ยฐC at Lingwood, Norfolk. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

The exceptional June 2026 #heatwave: - 130 wx stations (13 with data spanning โ‰ฅ100 years) set new June TMax records - 124 (10 spanning โ‰ฅ100 years) set new June TMin records - 26 set all-time TMax records, largely focussed in coastal counties - 65 sites set all-time TMin records

Kenley was an ideal candidate to break the May daily minimum temperature record due to its elevation โ€“ at 170 m it sits above the temperature inversion, whilst many of its neighbouring sites below the inversion recorded lower temperatures overnight bsky.app/profile/meto...

Weโ€™ve provisionally recorded the UKโ€™s highest daily minimum temperature for May on record ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Temperatures didnโ€™t fall below 19.4ยฐC at Kenley Airfield overnight, provisionally breaking the previous May record of 18.9ยฐC set back in 1944

Once again, same process at play allowing observation stations situated on hills, above the temperature inversion, to record some impressively high minimum temperatures โ€“ including Pennerley (Shropshire) at 357m and Emley Moor (West Yorkshire) at 267m bsky.app/profile/meto...

We have provisionally broken the UK record for highest daily minimum temperature in May... again ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Temperatures didn't fall below 21.3ยฐC overnight at Kenley Airfield, making it a 'tropical night' (no lower than 20ยฐC). Remarkably, the record was also broken yesterday.

Another pulse of unusually cold air for the time of year spreading south across the UK yesterday into today ๐Ÿฅถ 00Z radiosonde ascent at Lerwick measured a 1000-850 hPa thickness of 128.6 dam (โŒ), sitting in the bottom 2% of the 31-day centred record. Already 6 air frosts at Kinbrace โ€” May avg 4.6

Wondering where the sunshine has gone? Spare a thought for northeast Scotland; Aberdeen Dyce hasn't recorded any sunshine since 21 January! This is provisionally the longest sunless period here since records began in 1957 โ˜๏ธ

Dyce (Aberdeen) has now recorded no sunshine for the past 14 days โ€“ its longest spell on record (since 1957) โ˜๏ธ The daily frequency (persistence) of SE'ly weather types in the objective Lamb Weather Types dataset (since 1871) was the joint 2nd highest on record for the month of January...

Information is from Stephen Burt: Reading has seen 24 consecutive days of rainfall, the longest unbroken spell of consecutive rainfall days at Reading since daily rainfall records began in 1908, beating the 23 days set in December 1934 and in January 1970. It has been very wet.

Merry Christmas all, on the highest pressure over the UK on Christmas Day since 1991 ๐Ÿ“ˆ The Scottish mountains have been poking above the subsidence inversion, where Cairngorm recorded a dewpoint of -41ยฐC yesterday afternoon, with a corresponding relative humidity of 2%! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

In the HadUKP series for the "NW England and north Wales" region, Saturday 20th September 2025 was the 7th wettest day in the whole dataset back to 1931. For a two-day event, Friday 19th/Saturday 20th falls to 12th place, but is the wettest two-day period since Christmas Day/Boxing Day 2015.

Very energetic thunderstorms in eastern Scotland this afternoon, producing hail โ‰ฅ3 cm in diameter and torrential rain โ€” some unofficial gauges recorded as much as 50 mm in 15-25 minutes. The temperature at Aboyne fell by 11ยฐC over a 24 minute period โ›ˆ๏ธ

Storm #Floris, an exceptional summer storm ๐ŸŒ€ Provisionally: - Strongest August gust on record in Scotland - Equal strongest August gust on record in Northern Ireland - Lowest August mean sea level pressure in NW Scotland and Orkney since 1992 - Central pressure โฌ‡๏ธ 28 hPa in 24 hours

06Z surface analysis from @metoffice.gov.uk showing Storm Floris at 983 hPa just west of Scotland. The frontal analysis follows the Shapiro-Keyser cyclone model, with a frontal fracture (cold front detached from the warm front). S-K cyclones are typically among the most intense & rare in summer.

Genuinely lost count how many tornadoes were produced by this supercell thunderstorm that trundled ESE'wards from near Dora NM to Lubbock TX on Thursday afternoon/evening ๐ŸŒช๏ธ

March 2025 was noteworthy for abundant sunshine and lack of rain โ€” provisionally, it was the sunniest March on record in England, sunnier than July or August last year or the year before! โ˜€๏ธ Wales (provisionally) had its driest March since 1944 & lowest number of March rain days (1 mm) since 1929. ๐Ÿœ๏ธ

An incredible satellite sequence from GOES-East over the US Plains on Friday evening. Severe thunderstorms erupting along the cold front, intense winds (60-80 mph) to its rear suspending vast quantities of dust (area covered is larger than the UK), and a significant number of wildfires (black spots)

Recent anticyclonic conditions has allowed many parts of England and Wales their sunniest start to March on record. Wattisham has already received ~50% of its monthly average sunshine in just 6 days. In stark contrast, Tiree has recorded its dullest start to March on record (data back to 1931).

105mm of rain fell at Nant Yr Ysfa (Rhondda Cynon Taf), 103mm at White Barrow (Devon), 06Z Sunday to 06Z Monday. Met Office warnings mentioned 80-100mm exposed hills in S. Wales, and 70-100mm Dartmoor. Accum rates similar to Storm Bert, but Bert lasted ~43 hours. Map: @roostweather.bsky.social

Tonight's development of a mesolow looks to take a broadly similar path to one seen on 31st October 2021 (h/t @danholley.bsky.social to the similarity on that one). The corridor of strong winds from these only tends to be ~20-30 km wide but does pack a punch, perhaps caused by a small stingjet.
