Sadly, this is a familiar pattern from my time living there. German mainstream media keeps it on brand, and only reports when migrant communities vote for autocrats, and then endlessly lectures them about democratic values, all the while right-wing extremists are leading domestic polls in DE.

Ich habe in deutschen Medien nix hierzu gefunden. Vermutlich sind wählende Ausländer nur interessant, wenn sie ihre Stimmen Autokraten geben und man sie dann als demokratisch einbischen zurückgeblieben darstellen kann.

"The Student List has broken the monopoly of political parties. And what the Serbian people chose was not another party but a list of 250 candidates, 134 of whom hold PhDs, 44% of whom are women, and 135–140 of whom are now projected to enter parliament."

"Student List has become more popular than both the rightwing government and virtually all the opposition parties across the spectrum, most of which did not even win enough votes to meet the electoral threshold. Thus, the “old”, in Serbia’s case, at least, is confirmed as dead."

I’m very happy to be organising this workshop with @terezahendl.bsky.social. Bringing the health concerns of Europe’s East – understood in a broad, transregional sense – into global health debates is especially important to me. Join us in Berlin or online (apply by 9 October)!

Important proposals for how to fix science funding. Funding needs to map onto how science is actually done: not by demanding this or that result, but by exploring this or that promising direction and seeing what happens.

"A future administration will have some obvious decisions to make. But if all that happens is restoring the status quo, we will have wasted an opportunity to rethink the relationship between the US government and science, one that has persisted since the post-World War 2 era."

Autumn is a perfect season for still life. I wonder if the Dutch old masters would respect me for being so efficient by taking photos instead of painting it. After all, what’s “the added value” of doing something for hours and imprecisely if you can do it in seconds ;) #dutchefficiency #autumn

Indeed! Send something in today still and then come to Ostrava in November to discuss some philosophy of history with us.

Centre for the Philosophy of Historiography@centrephilohistory.bsky.social

A FINAL friendly reminder: TODAY is the deadline for abstracts for our conference "Learning from History: The Philosophies of Historiography and the Historical Sciences" that will take place in the end of November: philevents.org/event/show/1.... Send in an abstract if you haven't done so yet!

Tragic beyond belief. Absolutely disgusting how media ganged up on him, & all those despicable characters ridiculing him just to amplify Cambridge’s embarrassment. Including the @theguardian.com with its thinly veiled "here is a new bit, but we won't comment until the investigation is over". Shame!

What a fascinating interview with the great @russpoldrack.org. He gives a crash course in fMRI, through his personal history, and discusses some rather interesting metascientific issues about reproducibility, and of course, the future of neuroimaging. This is how interviews should be done.

I wrote a book! It's called WHY WE ASK WHY, and it's about the human drive to explain, combining psychology, philosophy, and stories. It will be released on October 6, but it's currently available for pre-order from Barnes & Noble at 25% off with code PREORDER25.

The ontic proposal takes these explanations to turn on a fine-grained distinction between properties, such that the presence of one property is explanatorily prior to another property. This shows how one could have a kind of non-causal explanation that preserves both Asymmetry and Directionality.

On the pragmatic proposal an erotetically regimented pragmatics of explanatory relevance preserves Asymmetry, even when Directionality is violated. Hence, it is not clear why Directionality is required for non-causal explanatory relevance relations.

After articulating two such restrictions, Asymmetry and Directionality, we consider how they work with respect to an explanation from network theory that applies to both social and brain networks.

In the new paper, Pincock & I show that Kleinberg models preserve directionality & asymmetry in non-causal explanation via explanatory priority of property individuation. Also, an erotetically regimented pragmatics of explanatory relevance preserves asymmetry, even when directionality is violated.
