I’m a lazy amateur genealogist with what may seem like a silly question: how distant do people go when adding to their tree? My ancestors tree runs in the 1000s. I go back & forth on adding anything beyond 6th cousins coming into the present but go further than that going back.

Trying to solve a DNA mystery in my own tree, I have a number of close matches that should help me solve it but I'm at the stage where no matter how much I look at it - the less sense it makes. <screams> #DNA #Genealogy

🧵1/5 My personal views on #Bessboro I was born there in the early 70’s.#Adopted by a loving father & a cruel mother. My adoptive grandfather was a #paedophile who sexually abused me from the age of 8 until I became pregnant at 12. I miscarried.

Contrary to politicians & media reports, there's been a continuous ongoing narrative that there are 859 #Bessborough children that haven't been found. If we're going to pursue remembering these infants, we need to be factual. It is in fact, 858. 65 children have been found. 🧵

To date, any correspondence that has been sent to councillors & TDs to try and mark the known burials of #Bessborough babies in poor ground at St. Joseph's has been completely ignored. It is an insult to the memory and resting place of these children that should not be allowed.

The lack of burials is already something that is unfortunately something that has been prevalent in institutions like #Bessborough. But even for the ones who we do know, there's a staggering lack of marking of known burials of #Bessborough babies, whose resting places are known.

The other 4 that are in St. Joseph's Cemetery, the religious order that owned Bessborough haven't marked the resting place of the four children & don't maintain the grave. These burials took place between March to June 1928, in this plot with them are 13 mothers.

No child who died in an institution should've been buried in poor ground, the order was paid by the State to care for these children. The order wasn't destitute, in fact, they had a large financial income.

Let's break it down by cemetery: St. Joseph's Cemetery in Ballyphehane has burials of 54 children. 50 are in a communal poor grave. This was predominantly used in the early 1920s from December 1922 to October 1927. These burials are not marked.

Found out that someone copied part of my tree and someone else’s and they’ve created this absolute mess of a tree where dates are all over the place, names are jumbled & Benjamin / Belinda Buttons everywhere. Not to mention this person downloaded a copy of a photo I put up on a blog post & didn’t…

And maybe learn the names of your grandparents while you’re at it. From the death certificates I see where adult children are informants, it’s clear many people don’t know their grandparents’ names.

I’m begging everyone currently alive to tell at least one other human being where you were born and what your mother’s maiden name is. Apparently this is a lot to ask. #Genealogy

I've been out of the loop in giving presentations. Part of me wants to try and do them again, but I want to try & present about things that have not been discussed, but I do fear that most of my presentations would be about more niche topics which might not be largely desired. I think my... [1/2]

Question about UK #Genealogy: Where would a Register's Office normally be located? Would they be in Town Hall in a small town? I'm trying to locate where the one in Llandovery would have been located in the 1870s.

🧵1/4 I was born in #Bessboro a #MotherandBabyHome in the 70’s. I am a direct survivor of these cruel ‘homes’. I am also a survivor of #CSA as I was adopted by a woman who had a #paedophile father. My grandfather was a ‘pillar of the community’, to me he was pure evil!

2/4 I endured a cruel childhood, my adoptive mother was cold & unloving. She had suffered the same childhood as I did yet she facilitated the #abuse I endured from my grandfather. #Bessboro is a place where I find solitude, the grounds hold the remains of the missing babies.

3/4 I survived #Bessboro, the missing babies didn’t! I sometimes wish I didn’t survive, I struggle with my past every day but I survived. I want an #IndependentInvestigation of the remaining grounds, a CPO will delay this for years, denying the missing babies their #Justice

4/4 Locating the missing babies must be paramount in any discussions with the Government. To lose sight of this is wrong, self serving & something I cannot & will not support. Do not let the voices who shout the loudest control the narrative of #Bessboro

99 have been located so far, but the number of people who have behaved with glee finding out they were coffined burials like this is a gotcha that proved their ‘point’ while also ignoring that there were 99 children buried underneath a literal road never fails to surprise me. #MotherandBabyHomes
