really frustrating when someone says something you worked hard on is "really broken" to which point you ask "what is broken?" and they mention like one small thing/detail, or even something wrong sometimes (incorrect assumption, user mistake). careful with words, they matter

a big pet peeve for me is when folks start using the term "final design" too much, particularly expecting that to mean a Figma link. static images are very distant from the final product, and expecting the designer's work to mostly end there is very short sighted.

two bangers on this week's Joy & Curiosity imo: "Be Kind" and "Burn Your Title". two posts that came in super timely for me right now; you should read'em! - boz.com/articles/be-... - notes.eatonphil.com/2025-04-22-b...

The noise of someone kicking in a door. A chair falling over. Feet shuffling on the floor. Then, silence. But suddenly: a joyous scream. There it is, there it is. A new Joy & Curiosity! registerspill.thorstenball.com/p/joy-and-cu...

top 5 feelings in life is discovering a new song that you just want to listen non-stop for the entire day. i always get concerned about running out of them, but similarly happy when i eventually discover one that really sticks! it just happened 🥲

exciting new release! for a few months now, i have been saying here and there: "Git is coming!" and it's finally here. the team nailed it all! also check out the sweet page we did to promote it, with some niceties such as a UI breakdown section! → zed.dev/git

Zed@zed.dev

Exciting news! Zed now has native Git support starting from v0.177. Designed for speed, Git-native functionality, and a keyboard-first workflow.

kicking off the day with with a record that i haven't listened for ages! creative, technical, intricate, melodic... a complete package. favorite track by far is "Sun Of Nothing"

i'm particularly psyched about this new interaction we put together to make LSP-based completions integrate well with LLM-generated suggestions. all of that without hurting the baseline editor experience. might definitely write more about this and all the iterations we went through!

sometimes, it feels right to break the norm: most sites/web apps these days use cmd+K as their search keybinding. however, that isn’t super significant for Zed… but cmd+shift+P is! it triggers the Command Palette, a fundamental Zed element. baking product education on the site!

a big pet peeve of mine in this American-dominated world we live in is when, in location inputs, they write City, State. like: "this is obviously in the US, everyone knows"; where the rest of the world writes "City, Country", sorry to all my American friends 😅

i'm building a job posting platform during off-hours, exploring different pieces of tech, and it's been super fun ensuring the whole thing can be navigated super well just using the keyboard. love adding keybinding affordances!

really, really glad i only started binging Severance this past week. imagine waiting for almost three years after that goddamn cliffhanger, jesus. good show, after all. kinda seeing some Lynchian elements on it. but maybe just biased due to mourning him. 🙁

this is a sad day. few pieces of art have impacted me as much as Lynch's Twin Peaks and the profound philosophies embedded on it. there goes one of the greatest, most creative minds out there.

Emily St. James@emilystjams.bsky.social

Lynch's sincerity and his penchant for exploring human darkness ultimately sprung from the same well, which is why his influence is so vast and why it's so difficult to do something """Lynchian.""" But he really loved when a thing was earnest and "corny," as seen below. youtu.be/9DCnIvLmKdA?...

- Sunday morning: it feels so good to close out all of my open, bookmarked tabs. peace of mind! - Monday, 2 PM: 43 tabs already... damn it.

a curse of Open Source projects is that it's just really hard to separate time for work & time for non-work life stuff. the stream of notifications, issues, and PRs is just absolutely never-ending. it's been a real challenge navigating this 😕

refining the multibuffer design has been super fun! not only we made line numbers clickable, but we also polished the scroll position you get in when jumping to a file, as well as improved the "expand excerpt" affordance significantly 😃

Zed@zed.dev

Starting in v0.168, navigating to a file from a multibuffer excerpt is as simple as clicking on an excerpt's line number.

An unspoken truth about the design process: The best work happens when a designer rides a flash of inspiration, and imbues all of their personal joy and curiosity into the design. When you interact with an object made like this, you can feel the enthusiasm given to it. Joy reverberates forward.

fun little recap page we put together this week! it's been a sweet, sweet 2024 🤘

Zed@zed.dev

We've had a great year here at Zed Industries. We can't thank you all enough for your support, feedback, and contributions. We've got big plans to continue making Zed better in 2025, but let's take a few minutes to check what all has happened in 2024. zed.dev/2024?b=2

the daily thought ping pong regarding AI: it's definitely going to kill us all in the next 2-5 years vs. it's so exciting, i can now learn anything much more easily and do way more stuff

Soon, you'll be able to enjoy a nice Fibonacci-like spiral layout in your terminal panel, because terminal splitting has landed on main. #10xDev

awesome CSS-only way to do something I've seen a lot of JavaScript being used for in the past!

yup... Git UI in Zed _is_ coming! sooner than you think—here's a sneak peek!

Nate Butler@handle.invalid

What if you had a way to commit whatever you were looking at with a keypress? (riffing off of some great early ui from @daniloleal.co 🔥)

take a listen to @zed.dev's design mastermind @nate.rip talk about designing for developers! big fan of the podcast!

I know folks often criticize @github.com's UI, and maybe technically speaking a lot of that is accurate and useful feedback, but it's consistently been one of the products that gets me the most inspired, design-wise. I very much appreciate Primer and all the care and attention put there!

same with Notion; such a well-designed app. what's most fascinating to me there is how much they manage to stack up a whole set of features that may even be full-blown business units in a way that sort of feels seamless?! like, I appreciate how the app's scaling nicely without major redesigns.
