NEW BOOK ALERT! Here's my next two in the Iconic Directors series (cover art by Luke Bird) - two filmmakers VERY close to my heart. These are published 23 October, and available to pre-order now!

My first 5 RPGs… D&D Basic Tunnels & Trolls Traveller Marvel Super Heroes Judge Dredd (MERP and ElfQuest might be in there too, tbh.)

John Power Jr.@johnpower.bsky.social

My first 5 RPGs AD&D Star Wars (WEG) Dragon Warriors WFRP Paranoia or Judge Dredd

This within a week of the Osprey Games news. Brilliant innovative creativity’s not having a great time right now, is it? BioWare made some of my favourite-ever video games, but even more I feel for all those talented people being shoved out the door.

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This is gutting news. Osprey made some of my favourite games of the last decade - Brian Boru, Crescent Moon, Undaunted: Stalingrad - and looked like they had plenty of momentum, too. I’ll miss them, as will the pages of @senetmagazine.bsky.social.

BoardGameWire@boardgamewire.bsky.social

UK-based Osprey Games has let go of its entire board and card game development team and cancelled its booth at the upcoming Spiel Essen game fair - five months after parent company Bloomsbury began searching for a buyer for the operation: boardgamewire.com/index.php/20...

And they published the magnificent Sankore, too, of course! The more I look at my game shelf, the more I realise how much joy their games have given me.

Huzzah!

Agreed. This film is magnificent. Go see!

REVIEW: Wildwood is an astonishing stop-motion spectacle from Laika. A serious yet playful tale of grief and loss, it makes you believe in magic – as all great animation should. Read the Empire review: www.empireonline.com/movies...

So I’ve been watching the old Sharpe series on ITVX, and (terrible production value aside), I’m having a great time. Mainly because I’ve realised that there has never been a sexier man than Sean Bean as Sharpe…

…but also because I love spotting the later-to-be big stars in small roles: eg Daniel Craig as a caddish officer (with his eyebrows weirdly dyed brown) in Sharpe’s Eagle.

Last night I dreamed I was the new Joker (IRL, not in a movie). The details are vague, but it did involve wearing a little yellow dress and saying the line, “What’s the equivalent of ‘feeling peckish’ for needing to urinate?” Look, it sure beat my usual ‘needing to get somewhere’ anxiety dreams.

This is very pleasing news.

Is it just me, or has Connections turned really nasty recently? Like, deliberately moving past “here’s a fun, challenging puzzle for you” into full-on, “ha, fuck you!” territory?

Oh great. The return of… Cole Trickle?

Does DAYS OF THUNDER have any real enduring cultural presence? I’d have said it’s pretty far off TOP GUN, but maybe I’m wrong? Does anyone really want this? variety.com/2026/film/ne...

I can't always afford to get these, but I love that there's a physical magazine for board games that approaches them as a real art form. It inspires me every time I see the new issue.

Tim Curry was one of the first actors to impress me with their versatility, mainly because he played Wadsworth in Clue and Darkness in Legend, both in the same year, and I watched the hell out of both those movies as a kid. RIP.

Jolene was literally the first song I ever heard. The nurses sang it on the ward where I was born because I had a tag around my wrist that said “Jolin”, and whenever they saw it they started singing it to that tune. (The song had been released in the UK just a few months earlier.)

Just watching Logan Lucky on Sky. There’s a scene in which a group of rioting prisoners demand that The Winds Of Winter be added to the prison library, only to be told that George R.R. Martin hadn’t finished writing it. He still hasn’t. Logan Lucky came out in 2017.

Very much agree with this - I saw The Mad King earlier this week, and was blown away. Astonishing stagecraft, and a great way to tell the prequel story we’ve waited years to see.
