I am trying and failing to find a RTqPCR triplex assay for research use for SARS-CoV-2, flu and RSV - everything is a branded, automated assay. Can anyone recommend a research set of primers and probes?

I assume this has been proposed elsewhere but I would actually be curious to see, essentially, peer review of a grant after it finished (what papers it produced, what worked, what didn't, the trajectory of research, etc.) by the same reviewers who initially assessed it.

Although formal DEI practices and programs in the US have largely been dismantled, your interactions with your colleagues still matter, and our paper suggests they may matter a lot more than you may think.

Have an LLM summarize the paper for you if you must, but please read the quotes yourself (p.8-9). We included dozens in the paper and many more in the supplement.

I urge you—especially if you are in a leadership position—to sit with the stories of women (particularly those of color) and non-binary faculty who took the time out of their incredibly busy days to share them with us.

And many women described a second harm: reporting devaluation and having their institutions ignore it or make it worse.

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

6,500 academics across 300 US institutions responded to the prompt. I was absolutely floored. As a computer scientist, my instinct was to analyze these responses with NLP-based methods. But after I read a few, it didn’t feel like we could do justice to these responses without reading them ourselves.

We wanted to understand why academics leave their jobs (doi.org/10.1126/scia...). We asked: “Tell us your story: what needs/needed to be different about your position?” I thought we would get a few hundred responses and I’d learn a bit more about the context of academic retention for myself.

doi.orgGender and retention patterns among U.S. facultyWomen faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.

Yale Statistics & Data Science is running an open-rank faculty search (Asst/Assoc/Full), focused on "Applied Data Science". I moved to Yale 2y ago and am very happy here! Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions. Review begins 11/1. statistics.yale.edu/assistantass...

I miss submitting papers to physics journals with cover letters typed into the form on the submission page, like "Please find attached our submission, entitled <title>. Thank you for your consideration."

A fundamental problem in the alignment problem for ASIs is that humans, enlightened as we suppose ourselves to be, aren’t particularly respectful of less sophisticated intelligences. How will we teach a subject we haven’t sorted out, ourselves?

Small addendum: It's tricky to see what precisely SBE did fund in FY26 because almost everything was relabeled as 'cross-directorate activities'—a catch-all for directorate-wide funding. This plot, though, gives a sense of how many program areas (30+) SBE had previously funded and how they were cut.

As recently as September, SBE's website proudly declared that it supported 63% of all research in US social and psychological sciences and worked to "creat[e] opportunities everywhere." Now, that message is gone.

In response to our questions, an NSF spokesperson said that SBE has not been shut down. But with zero SBE-specific funding opportunities, no review panels, and dwindling numbers of staff, it's hard to see the directorate continuing for much longer.

How did this happen? Officially, proposals went through the same process as before: peer review, program officer recommendation, section head approval. Unofficially, the choice was taken out of SBE's hands, going above the directorate head, Christina Freyman and to NSF leadership.

In addition to spending less money and making fewer new grants, SBE also dramatically narrowed where it made those new grants. Areas such as economics, sociology, and archaeology received few to no grants.

Dan Larremore reposted

But no part was hit as hard as SBE, which went from an average of 800 new grants to just 91, a precipitous, 90% decline. SBE spent just 95 million on new grants, far less than its average of 247 million.

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:
