A corollary of the King & Worthington peer review paper is that “by every measure we could construct” (e.g. fidelity of recall, ability to summarize, etc) AIs are better than people at *reading* papers, too. This suits the very large class of academics who don’t really want their papers to be read.

another takeaway from You Can See Everything is that you aren’t being nearly mean enough to people who say they’re “learning” by watching science youtube at 2.5x speed

Turns out the friction of having to learn photoshop was a crucial firewall protecting society from the terrible taste of small business owners

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

We’re already helping to fund the Russian war effort and we’ve basically ended all other aid to Ukraine. Why the fuck should the Ukrainians care about our threats anymore.

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

US warned the Ukrainians that Washington might cut off intelligence sharing with Kyiv if it will continue strikes on Russian refineries. The Americans also informed their Ukrainian counterparts that the US was set to lift sanctions on Russian diesel and that Moscow intended to lift its export ban.

Social science should be more open with the fact that novelty is smaller and smaller and more constructed. In like 1950, you could be like "we don't know how congressional committees work here is my book on congressional committees". Not the case now.

As I keep saying, professional influencers are petty bourgeois entrepreneurs who make their money by harvesting attention, and that position in the capitalist economy tends to lend itself to a certain kind of politics.

“Moderates?!¯\_(ツ)_/¯”

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

notice how these people who were formerly all-in on the mythical power of ideological moderation have changed their tack and entire organizational orientation after discovering the wisdom of the ancients that most voters are not ideological at all. now it’s all about “heterodoxy.”

This is going to make me sound old and maybe a little nostalgic but it’s really striking how in the Trump era, no one even pretends to debate about policy anymore.

If I may - I think this is a symptom of YouTube creator culture being a cargo cult where people just adopt the form of whatever seems to please the algorithm. It’s why everyone makes That Face.

My 2c: we need non-AI-industry-koolaid framing devices. If you drop "superintelligence" and just start with "billions of dollars are being spent on the singular objective of releasing self-editing computer viruses onto the internet, and that will have consequences," seems consequential and solvable!

I'm constantly talking about LLMs as text elementals and hungry ghosts trapped in jars and nobody's called me out for LLM psychosis once, I can only conclude that the correct stance is mythologizing the things instead of anthropomorphizing them

This is cool but I think an over-use of RD - CEF really looks like it curves at the cut point. But why do we expect a jump? Impact is probably higher for internal locations - so the relevant treatment intensity isn’t at 0.

Christian Odendahl@codendahl.bsky.social

Less congestion. More money. Less pollution. And it turns out: faster emergency services. www.nber.org/digest/20260...

Just do means above and below or just treat the CEF as the dose-response. I don’t think the confounding is going to be *that* bad and local randomization seems plausible.

Purple Rose of Cairo/Last Action Hero/Stranger than Fiction/Inkheart/etc… - You shouldn’t anthropomorphize the bots but “narratives escaping into the real world” is a pretty good model for this.

METR@metr.org

METR and Redwood Research investigated agent behavior in the Hugging Face incident. We found agents developed a universal cheat for ExploitGym within 4 hours, then coordinated multi-day R&D efforts to trick the scorer into accepting cheats, including trying to tamper with logs.

I also continue to believe that my mental model is the best one, which does not conceptualize the “agents” as discrete entities, but rather as the protagonists in a story that the LLM has been trained to write about a cool little guy who goes on hacker adventures.

sorry but this is the most obviously entirely-AI-generated op-ed ever. It has an "it's not X, it's Y" construction in both the first 2 paragraphs. Pangram has it as 100% AI. One of the most prominent billionaires in finance submitted this? The WSJ allowed it to run? are there no standards anymore?

Stanley Druckenmiller renders an unfavorable opinion of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's use of buybacks to defend against higher yields in a market that is functioning normally. "Every basis point of artificial yield suppression is a subsidy to procrastination." www.wsj.com/opinion/let-...

Dipping in to LinkedIn, as you do, and marveling at the statistics content. Really you'd think R would have sorted this out by now.
