Damn Flavio Bolsinaro is for real fleeing the country the second he realised he lost. That's real criminal behaviour.

Finally cancelled my Spotify account. Getting free from algorithmic entertainment one step at a time.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

y'all are out here calling yourselves "rationalists" and thinking that it is somehow "rational" to sell out yourself and everyone alive for an imagined future digital deity because of an intimate relationship with cloud software chatbots run by military contractors. Sounds rational, dude.

Y'all are supporting fascists, pedophiles, warmongers and robber-barons so that, one day, billions of happy algorithms can thrive on a technology platform that doesn't exist.

The marketing push for ROAR! (1981), the infamous film which saw 72 members of cast and crew injured by big cats, included comic strips printed in British weeklies like 2000AD. Drawn by the late, great Steve Dillon, they only hint at the jaw-dropping stuff in the film.

EA is shutting down bioware and I'm really upset about it. They made some of the best games ever and were an important voice in the industry.

ok non-tech ppl might be hearing some scary things about "critical vulnerabilities" involving certificates. the main thing you need to know, without getting down in the weeds about it, is that the fourth seal is broken. lo, a rider approacheth upon a pale steed, and his name is Death

The secret of most workplaces is that they don’t actually care about productivity or even profit, they care about fragile hierarchical egos (typically men’s). The only workplaces I have ever excelled long term at are places where the primary goal is just to be the best you can.

In Paris, the uprising continues. On October 18, masses of people once again took to the streets. Crowds gathered at Place de la République and in the surrounding streets, erecting barricades as police deployed large amounts of tear gas. 🧵

obviously many more important takeaways from the French approach to protest, but much respect to the absolute varsity level Whimsy of throwing a whole ass piano at the cops

I feel like the concept of a flying car was something that came from 60's optimistic futurism. Science was improving and cars were ubiquitous, so it was a shorthand for the continuous advancement of technology.

If we were actually in a place to create real flying cars that were practical and cheap enough to run, it would mean so much more, e.g. we could abandon our road-based city structures and live in 3 dimensions.

Right now, the idea of trying to make a flying car with the tech we have at the moment is nothing more than pandering to those weird gen Xers that grew up watching the Jetsons and have been crying "where's my flying car" for decades without thinking.

You don't get a flying car because you've put a huge amount of effort into making cars fly. You have parallel streams of science uncovering new advanced until it's possible to make things fly easily and cheaply.

I guess the other way is drop a shitload of money strapping some jet engined to a non-flying car and then claiming that flying cars are done. That's hardly the same thing. All this achieves is to keep the flying car meme in the zeitgeist.

The idea that you could have a flying car one day meant that the current way of life in the 60's would just continue as we solved more and more problems, the ultimate problem being gravity.

First single you bought with your own money. No lying! Mine: "Red Box - Lean on Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)", 1985. Still know every word.

But I got a swim cap today so my scraggly hair isn't dragging on me anymore. Crazy the difference it makes.

I've read plenty of sci fi, because I like sci fi. But what I don't like is when people who have read sci fi decide to build the terrible machine gods from the sci fi they liked. This isn't just a bad idea, it's a fundamental misunderstanding of sci fi.
