How many words can I fit into one post to describe trump? Vindictive. Childish. Liar. Unstable. Narcissistic. Selfish. Con man. Unhinged. Arrogant. Misogynist. Racist. Divisive. Authoritarian. Incompetent. Warmonger. I could go on. I try to avoid political posts, but sometimes… #VoteBlue #BlueWave

If you're a Montgomery Clift fan and have never seen LONELYHEARTS (1958), set your DVR on TCM for 4:15am Tuesday. Not one of his most celebrated films, but I absolutely love his role as a tortured newspaper advice columnist who gets embroiled in readers' lives. #FilmSky #MovieSky #drama

Clift's character is so vulnerable and the supporting cast is superb: Robert Ryan as his cynical editor, Myrna Loy as Ryan's neglected wife, Maureen Stapleton as Clift's troubled reader, Dolores Hart as his girlfriend. The film was released two years after Clift's near-fatal car accident.

Back from our weekend road trip across Michigan (Grand Rapids is major fun, btw). Realizing my movie-watching has fallen off lately. This close to Halloween and I’ve seen ONE horror flick this season. Boo!!! But I can confirm that Drivin’ on 9 by The Breeders is still a perfect road trip tune.

Just realized this #horror double feature is tonight at Detroit’s historic Redford Theatre. Guess who can’t go? *sigh* I’d especially love to see Carnival of Souls on the big screen.

First watch: THE TALK OF THE TOWN (1942) George Stevens' direction keeps this well-scripted drama/comedy moving at a brisk pace, with Cary Grant's character falsely accused of setting fire to a factory and, in doing so, killing the foreman. Grant, as Leopold.. #FilmSky #MovieSky #comedy #drama

.. Dilg, escapes custody and hides out in a cottage rented out by a schoolteacher (Jean Arthur) to a law professor (Ronald Colman) who's up for a Supreme Court seat. Dilg poses as a gardener, and the two men engage in lively discussions about law and justice. The film is a good blend of comedy ...

... and drama. It gets twisty near the end and makes a statement about the legal system, fairness and vigilante justice. I'm not always the biggest Cary Grant fan (I tend to prefer his serious roles over his comedy), but I thought all three leads were quite good. Definitely worth a watch.

Rewatch: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) Spoilers: This film’s ending is still shocking and troubling, no matter how many times I see it. A black man is the lone survivor of a horrific night of attack zombies only to be shot dead by a white posse. #FilmSky #MovieSky #horror

The film followed the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. (same year) and Malcolm X (1965) and came during a time of civil unrest. As a horror film, its low-budget black-and-white filming made the zombie assault even scarier against a group of people trapped in a rural farmhouse.

Director George Romero’s casting of Duane Jones as a strong black leader was genius, given the social unrest and turbulent era of the film’s release. Zombie films come and go, but this is my number 1 and has been the topic of long discussions among friends. It’s much more than just a zombie movie.

First watch: MALCOLM X (1992) It's clear from the opening credits this will be an incendiary, profound film: An American flag gradually burns into the image of a big "X" and footage of Rodney King's beating by L.A. police is shown. Spike Lee takes viewers on... #FilmSky #MovieSky

... precise period detail and superb cinematography, with some black-and-white documentary-style scenes. The cast (including Angela Bassett as Malcolm's wife) is uniformly good under Lee's skilled direction. I had put this film off a few times. It's an investment of time. Glad to *finally* see it.

Absolutely loved Fixins Soul Kitchen in Detroit’s Harmonie Park. Didn’t take pictures of food, but the red beans and rice, mac and cheese, cole slaw and candied yams were sooo delicious. Others in our party loved the catfish, collard greens, black-eyed peas and burgers. Big 👍 #foodie #Detroit

First watch: MRS. PARKINGTON (1944) Greer Garson stars as the aging family matriarch in this rags-to-riches soaper, told in flashbacks, that explores heir-apparent greed, family scandal, marital dysfunction (and resilience) and revenge capitalism. Garson is fine, but ... #FilmSky #MovieSky #drama

... made this film less compelling than perhaps it was at the time of its release. It seemed a bit contrived and patronizing. It's passable and worth one watch -- this adaptation of a Louis Bromfield novel-- but I suspect long-term it will likely be forgettable.

Rewatch: HOUSE OF WAX (1953) Sure is a lovely museum. The exhibits look so real. Sure is hot in here, though. Bad jokes aside, this André de Toth old-school #horror film starring Vincent Price is always a #Halloween season treat. #FilmSky #MovieSky #thriller #mystery

... keep other media at arm's length. Still, this is a gripping tale that has aged very well, with an ending I won't divulge. It was Wilder's next film after SUNSET BOULEVARD, so clearly he was on fire as a director. He also co-wrote and produced it. I highly recommend it.

I’m glad they’re doing this. This reminds me of when the Windsor art group Broken City Lab would project messages on the Windsor skyline aimed at Detroit, such as “Do you accept our friend request?” That felt lighthearted and playful, whereas this is such a different moment.

#MovieMadness Movie I wish I had seen on opening night. The Tingler (1959). Why? During the movie, the screen went dark and Vincent Price announced the tingler (a huge parasite) was loose in the theater. AND some seats had been wired to vibrate. This William Castle gimmick had to be a blast.

First watch: A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964) Sergio Leone's landmark spaghetti #western is a magnificent film, but I have to admit that I didn't love it as much as Akira Kurosawa's YOJIMBO (1961), which it paralleled so closely it spawned a lawsuit. Nor did I love it as much as ... #FilmSky #MovieSky

Stopped by Moonbow Tipple Coffee & Sweets during a visit to my childhood hometown of Harlan, KY, and I don’t know when I last saw so many books in one place that isn’t a library or bookstore. Also, great coffee, fancy drinks and sweet treats. #HarlanKY #Appalachia
