we're going to need a long-term plan, with broad political appeal, for ending impunity & holding the trump administration accountable for its crimes, malfeasance & cruelties. not 'tit-for-tat' but an american version of transitional justice. my take in @slate.com 👇

the P-3 cannot be trusted on this. if the UK & France want to prove they should actually remains as permanent members of the Security Council, they should move to block/veto both. otherwise what's their point of being there?

the thought of either the UAE candidate or Orban as plausible candidates as Secretary General shows just how much key states want to destroy the UN, the promise of the Charter, & a future that centers human rights.

Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States. "In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct." Report w/ new details: democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

this kind of democratic move is important on the merits - actually limiting presidential lawlessness. it's also important as a way to highlight how the administration violates basic legal constraints, even in the face of oversight, for the post-trump accountability agenda.

this feels like trolling. and yet, imagining this goes forward, it would be essential for the UK and France to block it if they wanted to retain any shred of legitimacy as UNSC permanent members.

Kim Lane Scheppele@kimlanelaw.bsky.social

This is unlikely - not least because it's Latin America's "turn" to have a UN sec gen. But if the US/Russia/China are indeed behind Orban, I would never count him out. www.wsj.com/opinion/vikt...

down with defeatism! three cheers for democracy, rule of law, & accountability! 🇷🇸 🇧🇷 . . . 🇺🇸

David Kaye@davidakaye.bsky.social

any win for democracy & rule of law is a loss for trump/trumpism.

primarily, they are wins for the people in the countries voting for democracy and rule of law, for an end to corruption, for accountability. but trumpism stands against ALL these things, & trump/vance/rubio have allied themselves with the anti-democratic forces. so we too in the US can celebrate.

so after a day like this, we have this projection from folha. it is guaranteed that the unusualness of the day will be hotly litigated in the coming hours/days

Let's not forget that Serbia's student movement - like those in Nepal and Bangladesh - features women in key leadership roles. Serbian women students, like generations of women democracy activists before them, have demanded political rights *and* women's rights. www.lemonde.fr/en/m-le-mag/...

look, nothing is simple and i have no parsimonious explanation for anything here, but a student protest movement, focused on corruption & authoritarianism, just won a major european election. a big deal.

Brazil will get more attention either way it goes, but this is truly an incredible victory for the student protesters. We ran this in March 2025, which explained the movement's strengths but seemed overly optimist in the months that followed. 18 months later, they succeeded. Gen Z strikes again.

I admit brazilian law is far from my strong suit. If there is widespread disenfranchisement/ratfucking, can the court step in to like...re-do the vote? Extend hours yes, but if today is so tainted by this, is there any recourse?

sorry if the story is behind a paywall but generally (english version here) (nb: folha de s. paolo is a leading outlet in brazil) (it's also available relatively cheap rn)

This is seriously concerning. So much rides on this election -- the safety of the Amazon, people's rights, oversight on corruption, whether the US's expanding secret war in latin America will get a new partner -- and local far right leaders look to be trying to shut out voters and steal the election

100% agree with this - plus we need investigation into the trump admin side of the lawlessness here.

Seems fairly obvious this is a must do when you read the sentence aloud, “Lawmakers in the U.S. from both parties have called for a formal probe into Musk and SpaceX over alleged unilateral changes the company made to its services in Ukraine.”

it’s easy to get distracted by these pardon stories, which are at the very least reflecting admin admission of serious wrongdoing. if they happen, we have to make them own it, and pay for it.

David Kaye@davidakaye.bsky.social

another reason why having a concrete accountability plan is so important. they have to know there will be consequences, exposure, liability of some sort.

there will be commissions of inquiry. they should be mandated by congress and have subpoena power. failure to cooperate should involve criminal liability. they won’t get to go quietly into the night if we do this right.

this kind of Halloween ‘decoration’ is gross if u ask me. what happened to old school zombies and ghouls, like we experience in real life?

quirk here is that bleecker street’s new owner is company owned by Omidyar, who has for years supported orgs that challenge big tech. more reporting needed on what’s happening here.

yes this makes it weirder. personal favor? deserves serious reporting.

e.w. niedermeyer@niedermeyer.online

hang on, so Bleecker Street was sold to a Pierre Omidyar-backed group that also happens to back Tosca Musk's Passionflix... and now "MUSK" is disappearing from theaters?

to be clear, Omidyar is one of the biggest funders in the tech accountability space. serious cred and amazing network of scholars and activists. so shuttering MUSK just seems out of character.

vegetarian menus also: if you ordered veg meal on a flight 30 years ago, you'd get a rice cracker. not saying airplane food has improved, but i haven't seen a rice cracker in years.
