The Climate Casino is taking the OVER on 1.97°C.

Jeff Berardelli @weatherprof.bsky.social

*Earth’s Warmest Months in Millenia* Global Temperature Anomalies may reach +2°C this winter (above pre-industrial levels) for the first time in modern history, and very likely in over 100,000 years, before the last ice age… 1/

So if I am understanding we are signing a trade deal with tariffs (ffs) lower than (most recently) threatened but higher than pre trump status quo and that is…winning?

Any chance you could you spare $100 million for more childcare?

We’re lowering the cost of moving Canadian steel so we can get more of it onto job sites across the country — and strengthen our supply chains here at home.

So, once again, rest of the world, what is the value of a "deal" if the White House decides it has a feeling and invokes 338 on items, regardless of trade agreements? Canada is again being used as the test case.

Good thing Mark Carney decided climate change isn't worth addressing.

Why is it so important to me that Canadians understand how little the incomes of the rich were taxed in 🇨🇦 in the 1950s and 1960s? Much less than in the U.S. 🇨🇦 did not tax capital gains until 1972. The top marginal rate was high, yes, but easily avoided. Why do I want ppl to know this? 1/5

Why would I say it is an odd renaming? Aside from the fact that CGEB isn't a great acronym, we don't charge GST on most groceries. I looked at my receipt from shopping last week - spent $172 at the grocery store, HST was applied to only $42.

Here lies the rub: how many times does Trump have to threaten any of us with the iron fist only to barely make contact with a whiffle ball bat before we all have to agree we’ve lost trust? For me that was last year. For Carney it was two days ago. For Danielle Smith, we are still waiting.

So he actually posted an altered image to Truth Social with the US flag over Canada along with Greenland and Venezuela (and we know what has happened in Venezuela 🇻🇪) and Canada has done what with the US ambassador?

The fact that the Canadian government's official statement on the president of the United States illegally invading a foreign country does not include the words "President," "United States," "illegal," or "invade" really tells you all you need to know about where we stand, tbh

"Maduro’s wife" has an actual name — Cilia Flores. She's not a great person, but so far as I know, there are no criminal complaints or arrest warrants for her anywhere. You can't even put a legal fig leaf on her kidnapping.

Minority parliaments, in theory: Parties forced to work together, government held to account, real compromise, substantive accomplishment. Minority parliaments, in reality: IS THERE GOING TO BE AN ELECTION THIS WEEK? WHAT ABOUT NEXT WEEK?

We're cutting $s to low-income 18 year-olds to access education, but we still have half a billion a year to make student loans interest-free for early-career 20-somethings "to help with the rent" AS DUMB AS A BAG OF HAMMERS.

Alex Usher@alexusherhesa.bsky.social

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.

I think there's this tendency in the Canadian discourse to assume that in any situation where another country is mad at Canada, it must be because Canadians did something wrong. Probably we need to most past that as the default assumption.

EXCEPT... Toronto doesn't meet the second conditions! Depending on the type of unit, development charges in Toronto are 20-40% higher than they were in April 2024. So they shouldn't qualify!

On Thursday, the Climate Institute reported the decline in Canada's GHG emissions had stalled and our 2030 target was no longer reachable. In the two sessions of Question Period that followed, a total of 82 questions were asked. Just 3 of those q's — 2 from BQ, 1 from NDP — were about the report.
