Episode 4 of #TheGrandTour is a must watch. There’s a wonderful segment in Berlin where James Engelsman talks about how the BMW Isetta was used by Klaus-Günter Jacobi (pictured) to smuggle his friend Manfred Koster from East to West in 1964. @ddronline.bsky.social Photos: Amazon

I spoke to four young western Germans today - the oldest 23 - about Sachsen-Anhalt and the election result. The responses - 'Stop giving them money!', 'Idiots!', 'they are all backwards over there' - shocked me, I must admit

#DEFAcember 46 for #DEFAsommer: The last two films on the "DEFA Fairy Tales" set from @deafcrocodile.bsky.social are from the late 1970s, and the first of them is "The Devil's Three Golden Hairs" (1977), based on a Grimm fairy tale better known in Germany than in English-speaking countries.

Today I finished writing the chapters of my book on crime in the #GDR - need to write conclusion, tidy things up, and the first draft is done. It's taken over ten years! When I started, we were still in the EU, Trump hadn't been near the Oval Office, and Liverpool hadn't won the league since 1990!

Really enjoyed presenting at the University of Chester's 'Festival of Ideas' today with Dr Stef Kerrigan. We talked about our project that brings together History, Languages, and Drama.

As a historian interested in historical memory and memorialisation, there are some things in my office that I think must make people wonder about me... like this fridge magnet and postcard.

Hi Everyone, sorry I haven't posted for ages. Shortly after I lost my Mum at Xmas, my Dad also died - on the day after my Mum's funeral of all days. I will be back here, just taking time for myself. Thanks 😃
