I'm heartbroken to see this news of Dr. Raúl Pacheco Vega's passing. He was the model of personal and scholarly generosity, and I'm grateful that his spirit will live on in those he mentored, and that his voice will live on in the resources he produced and shared, but I'm so sad that he is gone.
Feels like conference season has started with @trinitycds.bsky.social seminar on Community Resilience. Dr Octavian Robinson
@deafkilljoy.bsky.social discusses how deaf community and resilience can be tended rooted in gratitude for the past, informing present and future.
CALLS ARE WORKING - it has bought us precious time, but we NEED to keep the pressure up.
Tomorrow is the cloture vote.
KEEP CALLING: (202) 224-3121 ☎️☎️☎️
Tell your Dem Senator to vote NO on Cloture and NO on the Republican spending bill.
Do NOT assume your Senator will be good on this. Trust me.
🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.
Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.
Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it.
TODAY is the showdown.

This website makes it very easy to make comments on all 3 current anti-trans passport policy proposals. It literally will take you no more than 10 minutes and can at least let this administration know many of us stand with the trans community against their hate
When I moved to Canada from the U.S., I took it for granted that I could get back relatively easily. Because I'm trans, Trump is making it more difficult to see my friends and family. Please take 10 minutes to speak out against his anti-trans passport policy here: transequality.org/news/freedom...
If you’re a nondeaf scholar who researches deaf people and signed languages, it’s important to be open about your positionality & to be open to critical feedback from deaf scholars and deaf community members. Think of feedback as care for more holistic & ethical research, not as gatekeeping 🐦 🐦
Octavian Robinson and Erin Moriarty’s presentation highlights the importance of queering ASL - embracing multiple expressions of gender and sexuality

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Gaza is a disability justice issue. If you believe in and purport to practice disability justice, you must speak up. There is no excuse.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Gaza now has the highest per capita rate of child amputees, with 'many losing limbs and undergoing surgeries without anaesthesia.'

“Avatars should ideally not be intended to replace sign language interpreters but to complement them. “Automated translation may help alleviate some of the current limitations with human sign language interpreting services, but this will require significant technological advancements,”- De Meulder.
I talked to reporters from Deaf Journalism Europe about the economic and societal costs and benefits of sign language avatars vs. human sign language interpreters, and the slippery slope of access rights. www.deafjournalism.eu/sign-languag...
Just finished my first semester as a tenured prof at a R1. My students were an absolute joy. Intellectually curious and willing to embrace challenge & rigor. My scholarship has blossomed; it’s unbelievable how much more time I have for intellectual & creative pursuits. Service was meaningful.
I love being in a feminist department. How we approach each other, the mutual respect, the ability to discuss tough matters and come together is beautiful. I love how we focus on uplifting each other and manage to avoid toxicity. I fucking lucked out here. Last year I was so ready to quit academia.
responding to julia's call for a mass action today, i wrote about the intersections of queer justice & disability justice, and why we have to call on our leaders to fight for collective liberation in order to protect our communities

Today is the start of the United Nations 16 days of activism against gender-based violence (GBV). This morning I was interviewed by the @bbcscotlandnewsnot.bsky.social Good Morning radio programme about our new @britishacademy.bsky.social funded project starting January 2025

*for all the deaf children -past and present -whose families don't sign with them. You are loved.*
"Part of presuming my competence includes presuming I know my own gender. I am trans. If you do not believe me, you are saying I am incapable of knowing myself well enough to know my own gender, something inherently personal."
Beautifully stated and absolutely worth the read. For many of us, it has been crystal clear from the beginning that this type of legislation and rhetoric was/is never about safety.
Good morning, I'm trans.
I'm ignoring news about who thinks trans people deserve rights & bodily autonomy. I'm focusing on being out & supporting trans ppl in my communities.
Here's a list of resources, I forget who made it initially (sorry!) but it looks good.

Pub #3 A labor of love with my bestie, Dr. Alisha Menzies. We unpack the complexities of Zaya Wade’s young Black trans teen celebrity activism in the press with an emphasis on how they present her performance of authentic Black femininity as a strategy of transnormativity. doi.org/10.1177/0196...
Congratulations to Sony Coráñez Bolton, whose book "Crip Colony" has won the Lora Romero First Book Prize from the American Studies Association!

Above all, I protect my peace. Many questions here about my work in WGSS or identities as a trans queer person aren’t sincere. But if you’re sincere, enroll in a WGSS course or buy a few books from your local indie bookshop. Trolls get immediately blocked. Blocking brings much joy.
For the next two weeks, we’re offering ten free ebooks for getting free

As a person who can be forgetful but who also wants to uphold disability justice whenever I can, I wanted to share how you can change your settings so that Bluesky won’t allow you to post until all your images have alt text. Alt text doesn’t have to be a big ordeal!
#AcademicSky, let's get to know each other! Quote this with: 1) a project you're working on & 2) an idea you aren't working on but keep thinking abt
1) final project (?) on Crip linguistics examining deaf languaging practices. 2) queer crip feminist deaf studies- still broadly defined
#AcademicSky, let's get to know each other! Quote this with: 1) a project you're working on & 2) an idea you aren't working on but keep thinking abt
1) Reexamination of the 1992 Cutileiro talks in BiH
2) Postdoc proposal: influence of the Ireland, Palestine & India partitions on partitionism in BiH
I found trans community via LiveJournal. Was valuable for its time. Found my fellow disabled & autistic folk on Twitter. Was valuable while it lasted. Here on Bluesky, new horizons await.
Doing that post a photo to zen up the timeline thing.
This is the view #DrDeaf workshop participants will get this December, except with snow added. 😄
Can’t wait to welcome 40+ deaf academics- PhD students to professors- to the next PhD student workshop and writing retreat!
