Just got back from You Can See Everything, which shoots to the top of my favourite movies this year. Just incredible and exactly the sort of material that makes the documentary form work best.

The Conservatives will end the night fairly close to the 900,000 or so votes they got in 2024. The NDP will go from just under 950,000 votes in 2024 to less than 700,000 this time. Turnout was down — but how much of it was demotivated 2017-2024 NDP voters who stayed home is a massive question.

Saw 14th at NYFF closing night yesterday (Ava DuVernay had to cancel her introduction, but Stacey Abrams was there). I think anyone active on Bluesky will already know most of what's in the documentary, and it seems very much edited for accessibility to Netflix viewers with low attention spans.

It also takes a while to get used to the amount of interviews shot from odd angles, like from the side or even slightly behind the speaker. But it picks up when the DuVernay starts interconnecting Reconstruction and the present day, and the documentary structure becomes a little more obvious.

Also saw Once Upon a Time in Harlem with director Q&A; interesting history but best if you're into archival footage and the idea of watching strong personalities interact over the course of a single afternoon.

Saw Viet Thanh Nguyen present Akhil Sharma, Sigrid Nunez and (a suspiciously young-looking) Nathan Blum at the reading event for Best American Short Stories 2026

Bioware has shut down. Founded in 1995 in Edmonton, it was the software studio behind iconic video game series such as Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

If you're a Canadian worker, there's no better place than BC to do an hour's labour for an hour's pay. Since 2024 BC has boasted the highest hourly wage of any province (incl. imputed hourly pay for salaried staff). BC passed SK in 2019, Ont in 2023, and Alta in 2024. #bcpoli /2

Just saw Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother... Absolutely wild movie that somehow balances religious family drama and goofy pulp thriller until it takes off fearlessly into the stratosphere of weirdness.

Conservative government of Alberta is preempting Edmonton, requiring the city to: —Reverse the city's 2024 change allowing small-scale apartment buildings to be built citywide. Change resulted in a building boom: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... —Restore parking requirements, which city eliminated in 2020

Interesting idea.

Scientists describe a way to denote a protein’s #AI origin by subtly altering the probability of amino acids chosen for its sequence. The resulting pattern acts as a statistically detectable stamp, or watermark, while preserving the protein’s structure and function. https://scim.ag/4hBFWRs

Saw the world premiere of Jonathan Glazer's Joy of Joys at NYFF tonight and enjoyed it quite a lot! It's a good thing I'd listened to a lot of the new War Child album beforehand because it's very coy about actually including the music, (and it's also quite loud at times).

You are up to date.
