Eight years ago today, we suffered the deadliest act of antisemitism in American history when a killer entered Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh while people prayed and murdered 11 of our neighbors.

Based on book deal announcements where the geography of the novel is named: "Between 2000 and 2022, more novels were set in New York City than in the other top thirty most populous cities in the United States combined." —Laura McGrath, "Middlemen: Literary Agents and the Making of American Fiction"

Respectfully, I could not disagree with this article more. We hold our peer reviewers to the same standards we hold ourselves: respect for an author's intellectual property & *human* editorial decision-making. Yes peer review is a fraught labor issue but the answer is certainly not Gen AI.

When a journalist needs an expert, I am proud when they turn to an @oupress.bsky.social author for insight. Here, @tbertramgallant.bsky.social, author of "The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI," sheds light on the "college AI cheating wars" for the Los Angeles Times.

Jaweed Kaleem@jaweedkaleem.bsky.social

Campus rules to fight AI cheating are reaching new levels. At UCLA, some students were told to use mirrors to show their desk and hold arms behind heads during online exams. Elsewhere, anti-AI apps scan your eyes. I go inside the campus AI cheating wars: www.latimes.com/california/s...

A university that does not understand the value of physical libraries staffed with real librarians is a university that does not understand how knowledge is kept.

University of Chicago Press workers are forming a union! I stand with the @UCPWorkersGuild because unionizing is the best way to foster the strong, equitable workplaces we need to sustain academic publishing.

Love this. Publishing is labor.

Translations of my books have been published by 30+ different foreign presses. Only one of them, Galmuri based in Seoul, South Korea, sends me photographs of the workers and labor processes that make the books. Here is their beuatiful and elegant forthcoming edition of *Villains of All Nations*.

1/ As I reported my book, I noticed something that has completely changed American life: widespread chronic under-staffing. It leads to, among other things, deadly medication errors at pharmacies, flight delays, messy stores, and the crime wave. From me @prospect.org prospect.org/2026/03/19/u...

So pleased with the way Pittsburgh continues to come through for books and authors. This Q&A from public radio station @wesa.fm joins attention for Chris's book at @pghreviewofbooks.bsky.social, @post-gazette.com, @ryandeto.bsky.social at Axios, White Whale Books, and others in this bookish city.

Doctorow—who once, pre-AI, publicly thanked me for my copyedit of his book—is at least consistent in his techno-libertarian defense of Open at all costs.

There's a Richard Scarry quality to working with an author from your busy little town on a book that's about your town and then walking down the street and seeing it in your town's shop window.

Love seeing our author’s book in the window of a great indie! If you missed @chrisbriem.bsky.social's launch event for “Beyond Steel” and still want a signed copy, head over to White Whale in Pittsburgh.

One week, two Charlestons (SC and WV), two indie bookstores, and lots of ongoing support—almost six years after the pub date—for the big success story from the little university press.
